Hi there, we are going to travelling aroud Australia in August, we need to get wirelless internet. Which providers best? We thought it would be unable to get internet some areas. Telstra is the one? 3 or Virgin has got cheap plan, but does it work any area?
i use a telstra usb modem on my laptop, usualy btween 3-6 gigs pm does me, good thing is you can change plans if you find your not using it to much and telstra are prety much every where, although out in the sticks it can slow down in speed , but still good..
Thank you milo and Helena! We are using ADSL at home from Telstra, so we are going to talk to them soon. We just can't wait to get going! It is first time for us, very exciting!
Telstra is the only one that will give you maximun coverage , way beyond the others there fore more expansive. You will still areas of no service, same as next- G . Use a moderm that can accomodate a good external antanea & this will give far more coverage. we use the 7.2 home network gateway, far better & quicker than the card unit that we started with. Cheers.

Telstra Bigpond Next G is the only choice(not to be confused with Telstra 3G). It is twice as expensive as the rest but the coverage is 100% better than any other.
We had an antenna guy mount a directional antenna on the back of our van that can be telescopically raised by having one metal tube inside another with a tightening nut & can be pointed in the direction of the nearest Telstra tower so were not often disappointed. Cheers Jon

I have a nextG Telstra prepaid which I purchase a $30 voucher for. I then use that credit to buy $10 150MB plus pack, I use my phone as the modem, so didn't have to buy a USB. It means I am not in any contract and can just buy credit as I need it. $30 per month for phone and internet can't be beaten! 150MB does me nicely.(If I run out I just buy another!) Cheers, Dianne
I have friends with phone antennas mounted on the side of the windguard tv antenna arm & run the cable in with the tv cable , so when the tv ant, is down the phone ant, is horizontal.

Hi we use the bigpond usb I dont know if it is still available but 2 months ago I signed up for thier 3gig a month plan for 2 years at $29 per month with no extra cost over the 3 gig but the speed slows down after that. Telstra advised me to go direct to Bigpond as you don't have to claim the cost of the unit back as they send it to you direct.
Thank you, Woodpecker's plan sounds nice doesn't it? Because we don't use YouTube or something watching video, just doing e-mail, blog and looking for next area e.t.c, 3gig is suitable for us. We will talk to Telstra about that. Thank you for help everyone!
I'm not sure which plan Woodpecker is referring to but I can see no 3gig a month Telstra NextG plans for the price he quoted, refer to this site - http://www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/wireless/plans-and-offers/ Maybe it was for 3G he is using which has very inferior coverage, or am I missing something? Cheers Jon

Hi hylda and Jon, Woodpecker must have a telstra home phone and mobile . You get a $10 discount for each additional telstra service. $49.95-10-10=29.95.

Thanks for that, I knew I was missing something. When the price was stated Woodpecker probably should have also mentioned the conditions that helped get him that price. Cheers Jon

Hi everyone, we got prepaid-wirelss usb from Telstra today. Went to Telstra shop they showed us plans for 12 or 24month contract, have to buy usb for $299 or $399, we thought it would cost us too much. Went to Harvey Norman, usb was a bit cheaper(sales on everywhere).
We went to Telstra today to look at a dongle for our trip. We are only going for eight weeks so we didn't want a two year contract, just pre-paid if possible.
We ended up going for a Browser Pack, it gives us 3gig of use each month, we didn't buy the $129 dongle, we are using our Next G mobile as the modem and with the $10 multi discount, we pay $39 a month and we cancel it when we get home. We can also re activate it at any time and anywhere the mobile works, this will work.
I will let you all know how this goes when we return but it sounded just what we needed and no initial outlay.
