Mixed emotions with CIL, we had to make a claim and it was a bit of a nightmare. They were rather tardy in dealing with the repairer and it took many phone calls to sort things out and get the job completed. We have since changed companies, mostly to consolidate our insurances but also from this experience.
Thank you for your comments, I found that they were not proactive in the larger claim settlement but rather reactive. Took over 4 months to settle with a weekly phone call to them to try and move things along.
We are currently insured with them, and not to our real surprise, the renewal has increased by over $100 (15%) for the same amount of cover, and the excess has doubled, so I have decided to switch to GIO.
By having multiple policies with GIO, we have managed to save a little and a better deal all around.
CIL is just one of a number of insurers all owned by the very questionable, Vero Insurance Group. I harbour deep suspicions of Vero, as they were uppermost in taking advantage of the misfortunes of the victims following the aftermath of the HIL crash some years back.
rang AAMI for a quote for our Jayco 2004 19'6'' Heritage (shower and separate toilet all in as new condition). They would only insure for market value which they said was $22,000. As we paid $36,000 for it last year I was shocked - despite much discussion they said they do not do 'agreed value' . So guess who will not be getting our money. Currently insured with CIL but awaiting quote from RAC and may also try APIA. Could not replace our van for $32,000 let alone $22,000 - any one esle tried AAMI recently

Good topic. Got my CIL renewal on Friday. Will look into alternatives first thing Monday. Am trying to consolidate house, contents and car insurance with SGIO in WA, so maybe they will come to the party. We had a claim with Vero a couple of years back for a flood (washing machine hose came off in middle of night, thank God we were not away!) and they paid up immediately and without a question. Cheers, Tony

I was with CIL but a large increase in premium sent me chasing quotes. MHIA came up with best price and appeared to have a good reputation for paying claims. I have since had two claims, one for a broken window, settled within a week. the second was for a complete awning, and from quote, claim to final repair, it took three days. They have got me for a while.
Got a quote from CIL for $680 on our new caravan.......got same quote from RAA here in SA for $260...........better check your equivilent...RAVC..RNMA???
thanks for that Smoky. Decided to check with the RAA & now insured my old van for $75 for 12months. Was with CIL there premium last year was $125, this year up to $163. makes you wonder sometimes. Daryl
We have every thing with NRMA, when I finished work I checked all the ones offering discount to senior/ pensioners, no one came close. They have multible policy discounts as well. Van is in the 6th year & still holds purchase price.

Hi we recently had to claim with AAMI after the tree jumped out and ripped off our awning. 2006 jayco poptop, insured for $31750 for van and annex (so that must be agreed value). $300 excess. We couldnt be happier with the service. The premium was the cheapest we could find when it was renewed. they were happy to accept the quote from our local Jayco repairer and everything was finalised very promptly. We couldnt be happier and would certainly recommend them.
We are insured with CIL. We have some history with claims going back to 2008 when we had an accident causing our then Windsor van to be written off in QLD. CIL were amazing in their assistance throughout the whole time and coupled with RACV Total care we did have a relatively easy passage through a difficult period. CIL even told us of the things we were entitled to rather than wait and see if we claimed, such as paying accomodation on the way home. Without listing more of what CIL did for us suffice it to say we were more than satisfied. We had a new van in six weeks. Moving forward to this year and the hail storm in Melbourne we copped it again. Once again CIL were on the ball. We got a claim number and were told to get quotes. Soon after CIL contacted us and said an assessor would be at our residence by the end of the week. He arrived on the Friday, six days after the hail storm. Van is booked in for repair and has obviously been approved by CIL. We do agree that CIL is a little more expensive than some others but with oure experience of dealing with them it is worth it. OK off my high horse now.

After bringing the subject of insurance up in the MC2 vets forum I have been informed by a good buddy that there is a company that does in fact offer fully comp insurance that does not require us to have a permanent garaging address.
This is a copy of the post made in that forum...
Hey Blokes ref veh ,van ,boat and contents insurance with no garage address and public liablity i use Caravaners Complete Insurance Ph 1800069199. Marge Brierly in Shepparton Vic is the Broker to speak with. I have been with them since Jun 2002. I have 2 vehs ,1 van ,contents and public liability , and at what I beleive to be good pricing. Also with veh ins 1 windscreen a year is covered at no loss of bonus
So anyone looking for insurance it may well pay to have a talk to these peole, my buddy thinks that the insurance is underwriten by CGU who is a fairly large organisation in the industry so they may be worth a go.
Just as a side note on CGU they are the main insurer of soldier baracks rooms and are one of the only ones to offer insurance for their gear while on the move on postings interstate.
Cheers Grumpy

yes and all bad. We are looking around for another insurance company. We were robbed January 2018 our annexe was opened up in a caravan park in Darwin and the mongrels took my two fridge freezers which were chained together Engel 50 litre and a Aldi brand 50 litre. The Police incident report was put in and the CIL would not pay up due to the Fridge freezers being outside of the van. How many people know this one.
I feel ya pain Rob ... makes the blood boil to find that low-life have stolen our hard earned.
However, to be fair, you have highlighted a very important aspect of purchasing insurance.
BEFORE paying the premium to take out an insurance policy, VERY CAREFULLY and FULLY read their policy document - particularly the exclusions.
You will find that it is very clearly stated in CILs policy that items under an awning or inside an annex - even a fully enclosed annex - are not covered.
Been like that for decades. Most insurers are the same.
The decision when choosing an insurer and their policy should always be formed on the contents of the policy - does the policy cover MY circumstances and for how I will use the home/van/car/trailer; what are the inclusions and any conditions for those inclusions; what are the exclusions and any conditions for those exclusions. How they are paying claims is also valuable information, but not always that easy to get ... often questions on particular forums will give some background from happy users ... or those who got burnt.
How much the premium is doesn't matter if the policy/insurer doesn't cover your assets and how you will use them.
Doesn't help you with your freezers ... but forewarned is forearmed ... and praps you would have searched for a policy that more closely met your personal circumstances.
Cheers - John

like a lot of other people we were shocked at the increase with CIL, however we called them and had a bitch about the increase, the young lady on the other end of the phone was extremely polite and it was in her power to give us a further discount and knocked of $86.00 for us.
