Cooking in a camper van

My husband and I have just bought our 2005 Ford Transit camper, and we're looking forward to many great trips in it.  The cooking facilities are a three burner gas cook top - I'm not overly keen on using gas, but I'll survive.  The other option is a gas grill oven, and thats where I need some advice from the experts - or at least, the experienced.  Is this just a grill - chops and snags - or can I use it to cook scones, a cake, pudding or even a roast, or are we restricted to the "grilled cheese on toast" type of dish?  Are there any books available for this sort of apparatus?Any advice/suggestions/information would be VERY gratefully received.  With thanks.   Patricia.

Hi, have you checked out the ecocookers, I think thats the name where you just cook for 20mts or so and then put it in a thermous type container and it cook itself whilst you are travelling...lot of different brandnames on he market but they all work the same way.
Cheers
Sannie

Thanks Sannie, yes, I bought one but haven't yet tried it out. Apparently the gas grill is just that - steak, snags and toast - looks like its baked beans on toast until I get a bit more daring! Thanks for your help. Patricia.

For a cheap alternative for a Cobb Cooker, Google Kelly Kampa Kooka.

Cheers,

Thanks Sheba - what a fantastic gadget - I'm on the lookout for an old colander!

I have an "Easy Cook" turbo oven that is very versatile and certainly can cook scones, in fact everything you can do in a fan-forced oven. It can be easily packed away for travelling but does take up a bit of storage space. Like any electric cooking appliance it does require "on-site" power or a generator to run it. There are cheaper versions of these available too.

check out www.easycook.com.au

also Lemonade Scones on this forum

When we were at Mudgee, Ma bought her turbo oven out and her and DeBe cooked a pavlova in it, yum yum. They are very versatile indeed.

We're in business, Jimricho - bought one off the net for $50!  Can only be used when we're "plugged in" somewhere, but will be very handy.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I just put on another kilo reading about your lemonade scones!  A variation on the recipe is to substitute buttermilk for the cream.  Don't worry about the slight reduction in fat content, they're still disgustingly naughty!winkwinkwink

PS: If you line the bottom with alfoil the oven is even easier to clean!

Hi Tassie Devil,
if you scroll up towards the top of the page, in a post from Jimricho, you'll see Lemonade Scones underlined.  Just Click on that, and you'll get the recipe.
Cheers,
Sheba.

Disclaimer.... ok to use the link in my previous post but don't blame me for any extra kilos you put on as a consequence!!!!  winkwink I've got enough trouble with my own extra kilos!

I can't take credit (read "blame") for the original recipe as it was posted by another (ex) member!

No worries - I put them on just reading recipes/looking at food pictures.  This one is definitely going to be tried out - thanks.

Thanks Firefly - its a funny thing, but every time I ask a question, someone always tells me where to go (or points me in the right direction, anyway!).
