Being newchums to the travelling game and getting our van ready for the big trip at the end of September, we would like to know what's the best and cheapest Internet coverage to get while we are on the road. It's a mine field of mis-information out there so I am appealing for some help here. We were thinking of Telsa pre-paid wireless and knowing absolutely nothing about wireless, is this a good way to go. Any help would be most appreciated. Regards Tabby
welcome .. and I recently went through what you are now doing ..
For me, and many others I know, have chosen Telstra because it simply does have the best coverage throughout Oz ..
I'm not using prepaid for my internet .. and despite it being a little costly at the price of 50.00 for 3 gb, it suits my needs.
Although under contract for two years, I'm still able to reduce the useage if I wish. So far, I haven't used more than 1 gb .. but your consumption is something you'll have to find out for yourself ..

You are using an oxymoron here. The best and cheapest are poles apart.
If you are going to spend the next few years travelling to places where either Vodaphone or Optus serve well then you can go with someone who connects with one of those. This will limit you to areas of large population. You will get cheap plans but your internet will suffer at times of high phone demand as these networks load their bases heavily.
If you wander far and wide there is only one way to go - Bigpond. Purchase your service through them rather than Telstra (unless you want short term prepaid.) Bigpond will give better speeds in the busy areas as well - APC magazine did some tests and Bigpond was the only ISP to stream video successfully. There are some much better prices going at present than previous - any existing customers who have not switched to them already are wasting money - they can change over without penalty. For the latest plans see Latest Offer and Plans & Offers

Depending on what you want/need, I think Telstra pre-paid is the way to go. A $40 top-up lasts me about a month, and I use the net a lot. The trick is to remember to top up BEFORE your month is up, otherwise what credit you have left expires (and I wonder what a clever lawyer could make of that situation: it borders on theft when you think about it). Some of the contract deals are good, but I think technology is moving far too fast to sign a two-year contract. Cheers, Tony
