Slide on camper

I am saving up for my trip in two years. I am really interested in a slide on camper for several reasons. The main one being I want to be comfortable, but I don't want to tow no (I'm a girl therefore not born with the trailer backing genes). I want to stay in one place for awhile and be able to leave my home but use my vehicle. so a camper van isn't appealing. I am an experienced camper but can't be bothered any more with the whole tent thing. . But there doesn't seem to be may people on the forums with slide ons

BIL has one.
He has been up as far as cooktown from tassie and loves it. We camp every chrismas together for about 10 days and he just drops it off and lowers it down so he can use the vehicle. My only problem is the climbing over each other to get in and out of bed. Nice and compact. He travels at about 90km and has no problems.
cheers

Hi Stretch, and welcome.
We had a slide-on for many years and loved it.
What vehicle did you have in mind?
Be very careful not to exceed the safe load of the vehicle, and don't go too large with the slide-on. It is easy to do.

Cheers,
Peter

HI Strech..
Slide on campers,,,,,, I've had 2 & love them, You can even get them with remote controll leggs,,,(got be the go) In stead of walking round &round the van ..(just push the button's) Don't care what they cost,, In the long run,,  SAY 2-3 times,,takeing the van off & then on again,, You will thank your self,, As for crueling over your mate in bed,,H-ey ,,You might get lucky,,

                           GOOD LUCK,.,.,

G'day straycat

I've been looking into slide on campers for a while,
for my own adventures when dads finished with his motor home...

any way I've seen North star's ones with toilet/shower and ones with out, hardwalled which I quite like, but i also like the pop top ones too, any one have a poptop slide on?

I'll probably go for a mazda freestyle extra cab, (bt50) 4x4 as i would like to get off the beatn track so to speek, which you cant do in a motor home...
but there are plenty of type of other utes with trays,
for those that have these slide ons , could some one do a video of how to take them on/off the ute?? how easy/hard is it to back in?
 would be interesting to see

any way there are a few others too

tassie lot...

ive taken some pics (dream pics i call them)
so ill post a few up here if ok... for straycat , oh im a bloke and hate reversing trailers n stuff., Im lucky the motor hom has rearview camera!

I've built a couple and been involved with a few more, they are great, only drawback is the height, particularly getting in and out (stepladder required) also when driving, unless you have a pop top one they are "top heavy" and cause the vehicle to sway

yes most can come down to within a foot or so, the pop top is fine in most weathers but in extreme weather then it's "batten down the hatches" which includes the pop top! common sense rules here, if it sounds like it's under stress then best to put it down!

smile We have one of the Active Camper slide ons. On a Landcruiser single cab. It is a pop top. We have not had it in very bad weather. When it is really bad we plan to sleep with the pop top down. Just to be sure. Obviously this would mean sleeping on the bed made from the seating in the middle of the camper and not on the main bed above the cab.
We are loving it. We opted for the seating inside and an outside shower. Contact us if you would like we are happy to talk about it.

We are very happy with our slide on. It avoids having to tow. The "Active Camper" we bought does not hang over the side at all and is not too high so we are safer with 4 WDing and more fuel efficient (which is good because our weight is creeping up with all our 'essentials').
We chose it because I wanted to be warm at night and have options when it was wet. Hubby was not going to tow. Does this help?
