Good pictures Rolly. Do I remember correctly. The Buccaneer was the Fleet Air Arm version of the Hawker Hunter? If not that it was something like that. As you said Ibbo or Mr Duck will come up with the goods.

There's an entry in the wikipedia that gives a general history of the breed.
The original design was for carrier use by the RN, was quickly up graded with engines that could actually propel it adequately, and eventually put into service in the RAF as well.
The "coke bottle" fuselage shape was an exercise in "constant frontal area" which was really a bit of cork-eyed thinking but which eventually evolved into something actually practical by way of aerodynamics.
C'mon, Ibbo, You'd know something about this.

Looks like a Fairey Gannet from memory. I believe they had counter rotating propellors. Again I will have to bow to the greater knowledge of the great FAA Guru's. Is it in the Museum at Albatross Basil?

Yes, unless it's flown to Temora or Albion Park....

Not at Temora Basil, leastways not the last time we were there in late October.

Interesting ! Thankfully my nerve medication is kicking in now so since i am thinking a little clearer now how about another theme for my avatar. I like the idea of flying a Pirate flag on my rig but i guess there are alternatives, and that seems to be taken anyways. The best i can come up with so far, and it rhymes too is "Pony Pete" ! I could fly a horse hair tail ummmm ummm.... "Pirate Pete"..."Pony Pete"....uuummmm
Went and hade a look at Cameron Caravans today..terns out i know the salesman there and could get a deal. Tell me about Camerons please.

Oh Bliss. The Buccaneer did in fact take over from the out dated Seahawk single seater fighter that had been in service with the Royal Navy for many years. The Buccaneer was has been stated a "clone of the Hawker Hunter.I will give a run down about the Gannet.I would like to go back and have alook at some A700's that I have stored away.I may add that the Seahawk was the most forgiving and pleasant aircraft that I have had the pleasure of being associated with.Cheers.Ibbo.Oh yes,FLY NAVY.Just for you Rob.lol.
if you go to the newsagent.......and get copys of issues No#25 and 26 of the CamperTrailer Australia mag.......you will find info on them being tested ...with pros and cons
Elbe you are one very naughty girl. I don't know about his sails but I am greatly envious of his main mast. I didn't know they stored the cannon balls quite so close to the mast. Oh well you learn something every day.

Back to the Buccaneer. The Buccaneer did in fact replace the Scimitar not the Seahawk. The Seahawk was replaced by the Hunter T8.The Gannet had a Double Mamba engine conra rotating props and was an anti subamarine a/c..The RAN 817 squadron being their home from 1955 until1959 at HMS Albatross Nowra.Cheers.Ibbo.
Dave, funny as feast when the wings fold up in mid air..........ooops wrong lever he said ejecting from the"plane.no it cant happen the wing fold levers are locked until the a/c has landed.Cheers.Ibbo....................Gee ElBe you can see where the Buccaneer keeps his spare Cannon.....Seonau,I fly the skull and crossbones on my van.Was once asked if I was part of a Bikie gang.Cheers.Ibbo.
On the Gannet subject, although they were not apretty a/c to look at they were very efficient in their Anti Submarine role.Thebomb bays could carry a range of torpedoes and sonar buoys.Beneath the wings rockets could be attached. The Mk 1's had arange of about 900 miles and top speed of 300 knots. The earlier Gannets had a poor fuel range of about 450 miles. An interesting feature of the double mamba engine was that one engine could be turned off after take off to conserve fuel.Cheers.Ibbo.
I never realised that they were two seperate engines................I thought it was one engine and two props to give extra oooomph for liftoff with the heavy torpedos
Well I'll be a stuffed turkey........learn sumphink every day!!
