A timely warning to those heading out with gensets and fuel in jerry cans for other purposes.
This can also happen when filling the genset of bike etc, from a jerry can still in the ute of in a can holder the sloshing around in the can also sets up that static field and that Nono second when the hose / nozzle comes within contact contact range of the tanks remaining fuel vapor and it's all over red rover.
Irrespective if you feel that this is a lot of tripe or not please play it safe and but the can onto the ground before you transfer fuel in either direction .

Anyone who's been involved in fuelling aircraft is well familiar with the procedure of earthing the aircraft to the fuel pump with a "static" cable and connecting a static wire from the fuel nozzle to the aircraft before opening the fuel cap.
The issue of static electricity and refilling gerry cans is definitely NOT a lot of tripe.

Yep....I know about fuelling aircraft Jimricho. I used to do it in Ceduna and my son is a refueller at Adelaide airport. I also used to have a country fuel agency and have attended numerous training sessions. I have seen all the safety movies.

yes in some cases this is the problem, the nozzle aproaching the filler, little spark jumps across and the rest is history
I always grab the window surround as I exit and then make a point of touching the side of the car before I bring the nozzle over to the filler
I was watching a bloke a fair while ago he was hitting the side of the nozzle against the filler cap trying to dislodge the last drops, I just watched in amazement, some fellers have no idea
Some time back I chanced upon a USA site that detailed most of the service station fires over a period. They were back in the days when you could lock the nozzle on and walk away whilst they were filling. In nearly all the cases the fire resulted after someone had been back in the car to do some paperwork or similar. Whilst getting in and/or out they built up a static electricity charge. When they returned and reached for the nozzle this static charge discharged to the nozzle and that is when the fire started.
That is why we now have the locking device on the hand pieces of the bowsers disabled today. Diesel fuel is less flammable so that is why their nozzles may still have the trigger locks still available.

I believe that this is where the fallacy about mobile phones causing service station fires comes from. The "some paperwork or similar" was to use the mobile.
