Mate, try to empty your temp folder as that gets filled up quick smart and slows you up. Get rid of unwanted programs as well, and some programs don't need to start up when your computer starts up as you can always pick the program you want to run and click on it. Just go to your start programs folder and turn off auto start up.

Have you done a Registry Cleaner, and then De-fragmented ? That usually helps, although I'm on Dial-up. If you're on Broadband have you gone over your Quota ? I believe they slow you down if that's the case.
Cheers,
xina.

To those with advice regarding cleaning his computer - he formatted his computer. That means he wiped everything and re-installed his operating system and programmes. That produces nearly the cleanest computer you can have. When I say nearly the cleanest computer, a clean install of windows will produce in excess of 80 registry items left there by the install process that are no longer needed. Get yourself a registry cleaner and get rid of them.

Thanks Xina but I have only used 3 gig of the 20 gig a month allowance..I think I found the culprit....Trend Micro Internet Security ...Virus scanner..its very heavy on computer memory.....and does lot while running in background.......plus I also had my 360gig external HDD still connected..

Peter...I used a Registry Cleaner.....once....it removed most of my dll files.never again..
but thanks...

Dave what do you think of the symantec norton 360 v3, I have just bought it,

I am currently running microsoft liveonecare security which I am very happy with but is about to end

I am running windows vista 32 premium edition

I am also having problems with this site, I cant see any pictures most of the time and as has been said is very slow

I am with optus on an unlimited download 512 speed plan but according to a couple of speed assesors I am only gaining about the 460 mark, ripped off I feel!

I did not think of your security software giving problems as you had a clean install.

I have frequented computer clubs for the last 15 years. When people start with very funny effects and serious problems in their computers one of the first questions asked of them is "have you got Nortons or McAfee on your computer." When they answer in the affirmative they are advised to remove it and see what happens. On the following session they generally report that that fixed the problem (although this is happening less these days - perhaps less people are using it.) There are quite a few people around who will not look at computer problems without first removing McAfee or Nortons.

I f you keep your eyes on tests done for the various computer magazines there is only one that comes out top most of the time. That is http://www.kasperskyanz.com.au/homeuser. If you really want to part with your money that is the one to go for.

Amongst the individual programmes the top rated anti-virus and fire wall ones offer free use versions to home users. These are AVG and Avast for anti virus and ZoneAlarm for your firewall. Most of my computer club friends use these and have had minimal problems. There is no need to shell out big bickies for security programmes.

(It is interesting to note that whilst these are the top individual programmes, the suites that include them are not as good as Kaspersky or some of the others as complete suites.)

I have used both AVG and Avast, and had no complaints. However, I have now changed to Microsoft Secure Essentials, and Threat Fire, on the advice of a friend who is often consulted about problems by one of the local Tafe Colleges.

They are both free-ware.
Cheers,
xina.

this Site is couple years old but it will give you an idea about Anti-Viruses

I the last one of those I removed from a computer (forget which one) I went to the parent site and got the removal programme. Look for one of those before trying to get rid of yours.

I run AVG free and Advanced system care down load it here;
http://www.iobit.com/ascdownload.html

A computer literate mate assures me the problem of speed can usually be traced back to clogged servers assuming your machine is virus and malware free. It's a real problem in areas away from Captial cities in peak times as everyone is online at the same time and the system bogs down....

I run Avast and it does a good job, it updates for ever. I too used to have Norton and it was too gluggy. You know there are freeware out there to run anything, I posed that question on a newsgroup once and the replies were that you could run your entire computer efficiently on nothing but freeware.

Get rid of Nortons DaveO......don't even put it on.

I use AVG free..............threatfire.........advanced System care.............and a small firewall called sygate. Unfortunately Sygate has now been taken over by Symantec the makers of Nortons but it is still a possibilty to download a copy of it.

As someone mentioned earlier...............I won't touch a computer that is running Nortons.

The problem with all these software suites is they all try to take over your computer instead of just doing one job....they try to do everything and all that does is bog the whole thing down.

Even Comodo which was one of the best firewalls now comes in a suite incorporating a virus scanner and more. Grrrr!!

we used norton on our desk top for years with no problems. When we bought our laptop this year we got CA but it seemed to have conflicts with office 07. We now have Kaspersky and have had no problems.

Another good performer is Piriform CCleaner;
http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Use it frequently to keep the garbage that downloads itself into your hard drive and it also has a good registry cleaner, and one thing you need for speed is a clean, crisp registry.

I use that one too Basil. Do a cleanup several times and last thing at night, depending on what I've been doing. Once a week do the Clear with One Click Registry cleaner, then De-frag.

Cheers,
xina.

Dave, my computer genius friend advised me NOT to put NORTON on as according to him, IT'S AN EXCELLENT DOORWAY FOR VIRUSES.

Cheers,
xina.

I have used Opera in the past. It has kept pace with the Netscape/Mozilla range of products. What I don't like about the early issues that I have used was the mail and browse are too tightly integrated. I prefer to have my mail and browser as stand alone programmes.
