I'm also looking at the Evakools on the basis of them being very good value compared to Waeco/Engel (like about $1000). They look really tough and seem to be able to stand a bit of rough stuff.
I'm slightly puzzled why the white fridges cost more than the yellow ones. Racial predjudice, perhaps? smile
More research needed and I'm also inclined towards the Bushman, which claims to have a very low current draw.
Cheers, Tony

Hi Tony,
Here's a bit of blurb about the GD30FDC compressor which is used in the "Bushman"

ACC (The compressor manufacturer in Spain) has recently released the GD30FDC compressor, powered by DC current at any voltage from 12 to 42V, and intended for mobile applications.

Compact in dimensions, the GD30FDC compressor is silent, efficient and can work even with a strong tilt (30°), making it especially suitable for mobile applications in boats, trucks, private cars or medical appliances in ambulances.

Its high performance electronics allow a wide variety of programable functions. Its electronic driver features, being self-controled, guarantee reliability of the product in such circumstances as, battery exhaustion or any other situation of risk. The GD30FDC works under several voltage values, and makes it especially suitable for use with photovoltaic panels.

From that info above, it looks like our well established "DanFoss' compressor faces 'A new kid on the block' situation.

G'day,

I purchased a Bushman earlier this year and to date I cannot fault it.  I run it off a 1500amp jump pack with a 33 ah deep cycle battery and can run it for a minimum of 48 hours without recharging.  Voltage drop on the jump pack is 12.9v down to 11.5v over the 48 hour period.  The compressor is whisper quiet and most of the time I don't even know it is running, maybe my hearing is not what it was.  I run the fridge at minus 3 degrees C and at this setting anything frozen placed on the bottom of the cabinet will stay frozen.

The difference between the Yellow One (FridgeMate) and the White One (EvaKool) is the quality of insulation. The EvaKool has solid a fibreglass casing and the FridgeMate has a PVC skin. I don't have any comparative figures, but my FridgeMate seems to lose temperature quite quickly when the power is off. This would perhaps be minimised with an insulated cover, which I'm curently investigating, although this may be a bit complicated to fit with the external compressor unit.

Mine has been running 24/7 for 11 months straight and I am more than happy with it. I carry it inside the van when travelling, and when I pull up for a single night, I often don't bother to unpack it and I don't even notice it running during the night even though it is only about 1 metre from my bed.
