9 Volt Battery problem.

This morning I bought a 9v battery to be used in a clock radio.I put the battery in my shorts pocket.Whilst driving home I felt a burning feeling on my leg.The reason was the battery being red hot,to hot to hold in your hand.I wrapped the battery in a chamois leather and put the thing in a bucket of water and drowned the blighter. My questions are just how hot would it have got and why,was it a potential fire hazzard?.Has anyone else had this happen?.Cheers.Ibbo.

unknown to me, I would have put it in a clearing and just "observed" but get the manufacturers name and number first, either way it could have put a little bit of life back in to the cuddles department if it went off in there

Ouch! I have heard of this happening before, and severe burn was the result.
I don't know if any reason was given for the malfunction, but as suggested, report your experience to the battery maker.
I'm sure it had nothing to do with the heated atmosphere in your trousers, but it could have affected the future atmosphere in your trousers had you not removed it from your pocket.
Keep us posted on any outcomes and responses from the battery people.

The battery was a duracell type.Looking at its base I see it was manufactured in 2005 in USA,probably usa in China.I am going back to the same shop in the morning, that is if they are still there,Sams warehouse.Closing down sale was on today.Blokes got to watch what he puts in his pockets these days.Cheers.Ibbo.

A cheap import not to our demanding standards blah blah...
I have heard of the lithium type of batteries spontaneously combusting but not alkaline which I'm assuming this one was.
Lithium batteries have started many fires apparently.
I wonder what caused it to short out? A bit personal Ibbo but you were not wearing a Merkin made from steel wool?

DON'T LOOK AT THIS if you are at all uncomfortable when confronted by real life.....

Anymore than your hands in your pockets for too long and they start talking about you and the style of billiards you've chosen to play.
I believe that particular China is everyone's China. What would we do if the manufacturing sector of China crashes suddenly, or the relationship we "enjoy" fails? We'd be nickerless, homeless, and lots of other "lesses".

Mystery solved.Took battery back to store, explained the problem.Assistant found another battery and read the minute print on the packaging."Do not place in handbag or pocket as burning or explosion could happen."So there you are,let the buyer beware.Cheers.Ibbo.

You should try it in your pocket with two of them, makes you hop and skip I can tell you. Next to keys is another doozie. I have not had a single one do anything though and I instal them in smoke alarms all the time so carry one in my pocket quite often for work. smile
