You sure do, judging by the amount of dirty 4WD in Cairns at the tourist time of the year (winter to the southerners). It's not even Asians, it's Aussies from every state who do the trip. There must be tens of thousands of people who travel to the tip in one form of transport or another every year. I've been up here now for 2 "winters" and I have been amazed at the number of people who do the Cape and the tip. The Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys doesn't get any where near the amount of traffic in the dry season, and that's a good thing. The Cape is frequented by self-drive campers in convoy or individually, safari style drive by tour operators, flying up and over and back day trip, or flying up and safari back and the reverse, or they drive up, put their vehicle on the coastal boat back to Cairns or vice versa (not dirty poetry). It's an amazing attraction for the ambitious traveller. The roads are reported to be in very good condition except the telegraph track which isn't maintained. I think the trip is the attraction rather than the terrain and it's features. Maybe the plan to catch a barra is the motivation.

Why should the tip escape the same mindless vandalism that the rest of the country has to endure, if you can't catch them in the act that far up with one road out then what hope has the rest of us got living is suburbia .
4X14 year kids kids arrested for going around town slashing tyres 80 vehicles in all over one night , dealt with under the young offenders provisions and let off with a stern warning.
One of the vehicles had only that day had 4 new tyres fitted at $205 per tyre.
Bring back the lash and keel hauling

Is there now not some provision to keel haul the parents if the kids are under 18? I have heard of similar situations where insurance companies have chased the parents, I know APIA does. Strange society a bereft pensioner gets a $500 fine for stealing a can of baked beans....

The only problem with punishing the parents is they have done their best to teach their children right from wrong with a huge dose of respect. I know I did. The little buggers are very cunning in the company of other less disciplined kids. It's amazing what they'll do to be accepted and popular. The parents are usually horrified when they hear of their offspring's exploits from the Police. Apart from the anger with the child, there's the embarrassment and shame the parents feel, knowing it reflects on them and their child-raising efforts. The kids must be held accountable for their actions, and a "stern warning" is not enough to apply justice. They do the crime, they do the time. Not community service or a fine, but jail time. The junvenile detention centres are a bit of soft option. Detention may be a deterrent for the less brave, and they may learn their lesson, if they don't learn more tricks. The tougher kids see it as a notch in their belt, an addition to their credentials on the streets or at school. Make the little buggers pay!

Sorry but detention doesn't mean a hoot of difference to most of these misfits. Spent time attending theses centers trying to teach the 3 R's as part of a program which was aimed at long term young offenders. It was a vain attempt to do what main stream schooling had failed to achieve.. 1 in 100 followed up what they were given the rest returned to the streets much wiser in all aspects of crime , right through to murder. The frustrating part is If you stay with the program long enough the same kids reappear time after time each time a little tougher and harder to control. You would be surprised at just how many kids go through these centres in one year and to get that far you have to be a repeat offender and front a magistrate who is willing to impose a custodial sentence.
I think society has had just about enough of all these do gooder exercises in softly softly approaches , maybe the time has arrived for the return of the big stick and a toe the line approach .
If that means building more detention facilities then start building because the problem is on an upward spiral out of control. Central Australia has plenty of open space for building.
In my town, 3 bag snatches and 2 armed holdups with a knife in a week all by different offenders
