What about a cat

Hi
Its probably a silly idea but what about traveling with cats.I got this little one about 2 years ago and she behaves more like a dog with me except she does what she wants when she wants. It would break my heart to leave her behind with someone.

Thanks

Mate I have seen many many cats on the road. Basically I'd suggest that you get your cat used to car travel, some short surbuban trips; some cats do not seem to like the "change of scenery" others take to it like a dog. May be safest though if you devise, make or conjur up some sort of collapsible run for it and dont forget to take a tray with litter in it rather than hope your cat will return after doing it's abutions.
Might I also suggest that unless the cat really enjoys the car that it may be best if during the trip you carry it in a suitable cage.
I had a Siamese a while ago and he loved the car, declared it his property and would defend it vociferously....

Mate, as Basil says', get her used to travelling in the car in a cage such as, a parrot (Pink & Gray) cage. You would be surprised on how they adjust. Train her to walk in a harness when outside the run. There are plently of commercaly sold runs available. An easy way to train them to a harness is to have them wear it inside (At home) with a tea towel tied to the lead..................when the cat is used to the weight, take them outside on the lead and just follow the cat. Not to much pressure on the leash.

My cat is an 8 year old ferral............when I and SWMBO'd hit the road in Jan he comes with us.

Ahhhhhhhhhh the old tea towel trick, when I tried that my cat used to think it was following him and attack it, bits of cloth everywhere.....

Hey, thanks for bringing that up as I have tried to find out some info myself. I have had a siamese (whom is like a dog) for seven years and it would be like leaving half my heart at home, but I also want to drop the van and do some camping up the top, so that is an issue with me. My trip is intended to last 12mnths.

hi Muzza,
assume a cat would be no different, but when we took our pup away last trip, we found that the local vet, where we left the van, would keep him for i think $10 a day. if not, try the local information centre, they may know someone.

Hi STEFAN,
been travelling with acat for the last 3 years and no worries Ijust put her cage on the seat next to me and when i am on the road open the door and when we come near a built up area i tell her to get in and she does and  close the door.I hold the cage down with the seat belt and she stays in there most of the time and i put her tray in the back you can buy a water bowl with a removeable lip for water and it wont spill.
enjoy your trip with your cat ...............and do it safe....Franco
