Interesting walk on the beach

Here at Mudjimba beach is great for walking; hubby not working today, and it had stopped raining and was great sunshine, so off we went along the beach. Tide was out so I was looking for shells and anything else interesting. Lots of others strolling along as well. All of a sudden a great boom surrounded us and hubby grabbed my arm and we looked up to see two fighter jets VERY CLOSE (we and others estimated only 50 metres above us) zooming along the coast towards Brisbane. I honestly though hubby would have soiled shorts!! My god were they low!!!!  Wondered if they were involved with the imminent armed forces exercise at Shoalwater Bay, or perhaps just a couple of Top Guns having fun!! Sure scared the Bee...Je...s out of us!!

I can remember back in my youth when I was flying rotary wing and we would always try to follow the coast route when possible getting down low over the beach, especially those that had dressing sheds without roofs. just to see the girls scatter when the rotor wash hit, not that you could see much through the front but the door jockies could get an eye full.

I hear you ask Why, Because we could and when in your twenties your 8 foot tall and bullet proof

Spoilt shorts.. would never happen to me, how I miss the kidney shaking rumble and the beautiful, thunderous roar of those two afterburning engines at high speed and low level. PURE HEAVEN for an old RAAFi who used to love standing on the edge of the strip.

OH&S has removed that pleasure from the current serving members. Who cares if I'm now deaf and have kidney problems, I'd be back there tomorrow if I could.

Hey Wombat, did that in the choppers back in the late 60s around Darwin, followed it up 50 feet off the deck, 50 feet out to sea, flying just above stall speed in a caribou, sitting on the ramp with the only thing keeping me in the plane was the monkey strap...

Even did some slip streaming....biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Was at Avalon a few years when they still had the F111, on the demo it stood on its tail, hit the afterburners and screamed skywards directly above the crowd, spayed us all with with kero, or whatever the fuel is, and deafened us, the organisers apoligesed to the crowd, my ears were ringing for a few days after that, can understand why you are little deaf Guru

Just for you "areo jockeys"

I was working at Alice Springs airport, when there was a major refurbish of the "space base", an American Sat station, just out of town.

They brought in all that was needed using a "starlifter" (or was it a "Galexy"). I hope you know about them, huge plane. Looked to me like you could fit two 747 bodies inside them.

On the last trip for this thing, the jockey decided to give us a demo, of its abilities. On leaving for the last time, he lined it up at the very end of the strip, took the loud control to full, and wrentch the stick back, halfway down the strip. Stood this thing on its tail, and vertically, headed directly for the heavens. What a sound and spectical, to see such a hugh craft do it.

Downside for him though, the outer engines thrust got under the tarmac, and tore up the runway, all the way to where he lifted off. Took them 3 weeks to fix, and closed the airport for a few days.

We used to get B-52 Bombers doing practise runs, with the Bomb-bay doors open, about the same height over our dwelling near Temple Bay on Cape York in '84/'85.
That was an experience!
Cheers,
xina.

I had an interesting walk along Merimbula beach last November with Gracie.... She is on her lead and we are walking to the "dog swimming area" marked by a big red disk on a stick at each end of the area when we were approached by 2 women of european derivation who spoke with French accents and asked if it was ok to swim au naturel. I of course assured them that the beach between the red disks was exactly for that purpose. Not that anyone cares -  everyone down that way must be on welfare and can't afford swimwear anyway but I thought it convenient to have them close to me for their own personal safety.....

Dave of course I kept them within an arms reach at all times, strangely they seemed concerned that I kept my shorts on which I explained was so that if Gracie should venture outside the marked area I could run over and get her....

I'll have
