gear selection

While on the subject of the Daydreamer, although the motor is in good nick as is the gearbox, it is hard to select a specific gear, with the standard Isuza 5 speed box can someone tell me what to expect when I get down there to sort it out, with reverse hard to thigh and forward, the throw to get it in 5th (opposit cnr) seems a hell of a long way
Im having a day off, thats why Im sitting at this thing

is the daydreamer a pusher, if so is the shift hydraulic, air or rods

if it is rods then you may be able to get some adjustment on the connector knuckles a little bit of play on each one will add up to a mile by the time it gets down to the box

if it is air or hydraulic it may be simply the state of affairs and will have to be put up with unless you are willing to "cut and shut" selector arms, can be simple but can be a can of worms

Mike, it sounds to me that you have the LHD version of the gear selector. Of those I have driven, they always seem hard to select, maybe its the lead in of the selector being made for LHD, never found out.

As for the swing from top to bottom, yep, with a bus and a floor shift, there is a fair bit. As has been said, this is compounded, if the linkage is not tight.

If it is a rear engine (pusher) and cable or rod, then there can be lots of areas that compound the problem.

Just tighten up where you can, and see if that makes it good enough, Outside of that, you are looking at big mods

Thank you Dave and Bob,
I think its all purely mechanical, got under and saw a ball joint at the front, (gear lever extension under the floor) a long solid 1.5 inch shaft heading towards the back, on going throught the chassis rails two universals, and then another ball joint at the gear box

yep that makes sense, each one of those little joints may have a tiny bit of play and should, in theory have an adjuster

with a little bit of time and a great smattering of patience nearly all play could be taken out

I had a Mitsubishi Canter 3 ton truck, all mechanicals up front. The linkages had 3 bolts going through the "universal joints" holding them to the rods. I replaced them with roll pins and the gearshift was like new again. Hope this helps a bit
