Moderators

G'day all,

Regarding Moderators for the forum if we all treat each other with respect as has been the case in the past, then I cannot see the need for Moderators.  Cindy, our Webmistress does a wonderful job of controlling things on this forum and we have not needed to have anyone else telling us what we can or cannot do.

Cindy is the Boss and although I know she is busy with her own problems I am quite happy for her to tell any of us to pull our head in if needs be.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

John

I didn't realise there was a problem. However Cindy is stretched pretty thin and it may not be such a bad idea to have some help as Moderators. I mean we really are so disorganised and well Tangential and though there is nothing wrong with that it might be nice if one or 2 of us could be given the pleniptentiary powers to move posts to the correct area and "discipline" troublemakers and generally make Cindy's job easier....

I dont think we need a moderator on this forum simply because if you say or write something which is considered out of order their are plenty of people who will quickly put you on the right track. Lets keep it simple and interesting Keith

oh bugger that, just post with respect for each other, control yourselves and leave big brother out of it, having moderaters that belong to the forum is like giving the nutters the keys to the asylum

So far the members have been self-moderated. If it looks like getting out of hand someone puts the brakes on. Failing that, Cindy clicks in and closes the topic. Freedom of speech and the quality of the information are what keeps this forum so popular. We can add a quirky comment, note our own observations and experiences, or just read it , say nothing and move on. Take what we want and leave the rest. It's all about respect - respecting the others' opinion and their right to express it, and the right to disagree. Not everyone will see it from every side, but don't condemn them for having an opinion which may not be yours. Thank God for freedom - of speech and lifestyle. Vote NO for Moderator. Cheers Chris.

Being a person of very few words, all I can say is that I agree with all those that think this forum does not need a Moderator.

I think Chris has said all that need be said on the matter. And I also did not think we had a problem. I love the occassional banter on here. Sure there are times that someone takes offence, but surely we are adult enough to rise above it.

Thats my opinion for what its worth.

Have a good one out there.

I think everyone is baulking at the term moderator, perhaps even an Assitant Webmaster or Admin title to help Cindy out and remove some of the pressure from her without having to worry about the forum too much, someone in the same ilk as Dave if he was interested bearing in mind he may not want the position or the stress/responsibility.

The following quote in Granny's welcome back to Dave seems to indicate that she feels some form of supervision of the forum may be needed;

" We're ok, really, but a little supervision might be handy."

The fact that there have only been one instance where Cindy got involved (probably because someone contacted her) does not mean there have not been times when it could have been warranted. It is also possible that some members of this site may have left and just not bothered to revisit again because of the attitudes and comments of some, the recorded number of site members do not reflect if all of these members still belong to the site, they may have left long ago. Some of you probably know of some that haven't returned to posting etc. ( By the way, I have tried to find an unsubsribe link in the Users section, but couldn't find one, does anyone know where to find it if it is there?)

Any, the consensus from those who are still posting seems to be not in favour of a forum representative from the members, despite the contradictory comment posted above, so I assume that will be the status quo. Members get the forum they deserve, and seem to be happy in general with the way it is. I am a great supporter of the majority vote, so if that is the way it is going to be then so be it.

Vic

I have the feeling that there is more to this than meets the eye. I know from practical experience that running a forum well takes more than a few minutes a week. Yes the term moderator is perhaps too strong we don't really need moderating we need organising. Remember the days of the Unions we had "Organisers" then no
Now that Dave has returned maybe he can help Cindy, it's a big job really running a forum, blokes like Vic post stuff everywhere and the whole show just needs tidying up and Cindy does not (obvoiusly) have the time to do it. Frankly I tend to get a bit stressed (I'm jesting) answering questions that have been asked before but because we are so tangential the responses get put anywhere and everywhere and it's like trying to have a conversation with John Clease and Eric Sykes, or the 2 yokels from the 2 Ronnies.....
I'm not in anyway suggesting a coup de etat but as we mature (no pun intended) as a forum we need some extra organisation with out loosing the friendly thrust and parry of the forum, though I know some of you don't like that at all, some of you want this forum to be a place of moral refection, almost a quiet room. But this forum will get to big and bulky for 1 person to run if it is not there already.
Note to Cindy, Can you check the forum stats and cut and paste the results into a post so that we can see exactly how fast we are growing? I think we will all be astonished with the results. Another thing that needs doing is a tidy up of the membership. Maybe a cul (using humane methods) of those who have not posted after joining or of those who have stumbled in here by accident and have no interest at all. Easily done using the Administration panel and makes the forum neater and more "intimate". I think we would all like to be more intimate.......
This forum is fast becoming "THE FORUM" with the advent of the bumper stickers I think we need to stay on top and focused.
Would you believe that my Email address which is greynomads@ is now being sought after for purchase?????A force bigger than me wants my email addy.....

I was merely implying we continue to "supervise" ourselves.  I didn't mean it was a job for Dave.  Even he needs "supervision" from time to time, as do I, although I haven't been pulled in to gear yet.
We've very successfully "supervised" ourselves to now, so let's keep up the good work folks and get on with sharing our wisdom and experiences in the good spirit of The Grey Nomads Forum.
Cheers Happy Granny Chris

I dont think we have a problem, part of this forum thats keeping me interested is the way we all have a bit of each other, how else can one get the best of all the info on offer, just because one doesnt agree with someones comment doesnt mean that that person is wrong, there is no right or wrong in this world, only a persons opinon, \
Grow up the lot of you and write it as it is------------And I forgive all the spelling mistakes
read my latest post on my puppy, hey Dave I got me a dog again

G'day,

Many thanks to all who have taken the time to respond to this topic.

I have never thought we have a problem or need a Moderator and started this topic in response to another members suggestion that a Moderator may be the way to go, also as an attempt to gauge the opinions of other members.  It would seem that most feel we are quite capable of looking after things amongst ourselves and that a Moderator is at this time definitely not required.

I firmly believe that if Cindy decides she requires help to run the forum she will post a message to that effect.

Regards

John

Mike I've been reading all the posts and of the lot of them the one that brought the biggest smile to my old ugly dial was that you had a pup, well done indeed

really pleased that you have another, a big step forward in my opinion

everybody needs a companion in the form of an all forgiving little chair leg wetter, one pulled me out of a dangerous place and I still go and tell her all my troubles, best part is she doesnt say a word to anyone

not like the dragon, tell her and the bloody world knows, doctors included

as for a moderator well i really dont see the need for one, never had one yet around any of the camps that I been in, fair dinkum conversation between any number of persons will attract a certain amount of controversy but in here it is too easy to "have a go at someone" and hide for a little while, not like real life at all

I hang my head in shame at some of my posts, when taken out of context they are nothing short of terrible, but thats how I am "out here" I speak it as I see it

I agree with Basil r.e. non posters, I had a quick look and the first 20 pages of members have not posted, then the rest is littered with members who have since left, off with their heads I say

dont know who said about the spelling but if all you people are like me then we couldnt give a rats about mispelt words, content is far more important just keep up the posts, your writing will improve with use, but I dont care if it doesnt
