Ethanol fuel caution for boats

NSW MaritimeimgPicShadowCnrTop.gif

This fuel sample shows fuel that has absorbed so much water that phase separation has taken place, with the alcohol, water and impurities settling to the bottom. Using this fuel could cause serious engine damage.

NSW Maritime advises all boat owners to check with a local dealer about the suitability of ethanol mix fuels for their marine petrol engine.

NSW Maritime General Manager Recreational Boating and Regional Services Brett Moore said there was growing concern among boat operators about using ethanol mix fuels in their boats.

A number of risks have been identified including:

  • Ethanol can affect some fibreglass fuel tanks because of its potential to act as a solvent;
  • Ethanol can affect older fuel lines, seals and gaskets; and
  • The fuel can separate into the petrol and ethanol components if condensation forms in the tank or where the fuel is stored for extended periods.

Use of an inappropriate fuel can result in damage to the engine and boat components that may require repair or replacement, Mr Moore said.

Fuels with ethanol can attack some fuel-system components, such as tanks and lines if they are not made from acceptable ethanol-acceptable materials.

The ethanol can soften some fibreglass or rubber components or can leach resins from other materials from rubber components which can foul filters, carburettors or injectors.

Whilst some boat owners have tried to do the right thing in their quest to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing the greener option, NSW Maritime advises boat owners to check with their engine and boat dealer about the appropriate fuel choice, Mr Moore said.

RE: Ethanol = Ethanol Sucks

I have experienced good ol ethanol on two fronts, one in my own vehicle (car) and one in the busses I used to drive (school bus/route).

If you seen the engines, and even the bowsers of ethanol after a few years you would think twice about whacking in your fuel tank. Its more corrosive then caustic soda, the bowser at work was a rusted shell, and the engines on the few busses that ran on ethanol were constantly been worked on and repaired, and did I mention they were gutless, lot less power then diesel.

In my car I ran it for awhile and I was getting really bad economy with it, so for the few bucks I was saving at the pump it wasnt worth it as I had to use more of it to get the same mileage.

I ended up switching to the high octane stuff and got really good mileage out of it, although this was back a few years now when it wasn't so expensive, these days the high octane is outrageous in price in most places.

RE: Ethanol

Ethanol is not on my list of favourites. However if you put about 50 ml to a tank of fuel it will clean the gunge out of the lines and cause any water in the fuel (diesel or petrol) to mix with the fuel and it gets burned as the tank empties.
Ethanol if you look closeley is the main ingredient in "Injector Cleaner" just use it sparingly and be prepared to change fuel filters after it's use.....

Having just sold a business, that sold fuel, i can now add, what seems to be an industry secret, and its not to do with Ethanol, its PULP

PULP = Premium Unleaded, is corrosive. So many PULP pumps failing due to holes in the pipework, feeding the pumps.

Ethanol, is not as high in octane, slower burning, so yep, less power. Are they mixing it with PULP?

I've heard many reports of power loss and up to ten percent less economy using e10 blends, I cant use it, wouldnt want to, only the premium for little blue, she will die on the normal stuff!!
