Motor Vehicle Insurance

Just a warning to any travellers/nomads who may have their comprehensive motor vehicle insurance with Budget Insurance.  Should you be like me and intend to travel this great country, they have advised me that I am not covered should I have my vehicle away from my insured address for more than 90 consecutive days.

Whilst I don't have a problem if that is their rule, but I am concerned that nowhere in their Policy (Product Disclosure Statement) do they mention anything about it.  I found out in time through a collegue - thankfully.  One guess where my insurance is not!!

It pays to ask your insurer this particular question as they will only tell you that you are covered Australia Wide.  I must say that several other insurance companies I have contacted have never heard of this restriction.

It's the "fine print" which recent forced me to change my comprehensive insurer. I was covered by RAC WA, but since I'm on the road they no longer insure me because my vehicle is not garaged in WA.   They still accept my membership for Ultimate Roadside Assistance, and I've had to used it twice since I've been in Cairns.
So I shopped around and found National Seniors do it no matter where I'm garaged. They have a contingency plan for "Nomads". The underwriters are ALLIANZ, but it's much more economical to go through seniors, and they handle all the claim issues.
The van is insured with CIL, and they have rates for on site and on the road, but I've had no problems.
It really does pay to shop around.
Safe and happy travel, Granny.

Unless an insurance company keep video surveillence on every garaged car they insure, or hire private investigators to follow your vehicle around the
length and breadth of the country, are they going to find out your car has not been at the "insured address for more than 90 consecutive days"?

Surely in a legal dispute it would be hard to prove, especially if you did a lot of free camping off the beaten track and your every movement was not traceable.

after reading this thread decided i should ring my insurance company and check out the 90day clause
When i said I would be away for 112 days the person answering the phone said didn't think we would be covered. asked to speak to his team leader, similar response so asked to speak to his manager.
To cut a long story short, the reason for that clause is to stop people moving to a new address which may warrant a higher premium and not advising the insurance cover of the change. In our case we would still be covered.
I asked for this to be sent to me writing, can't do that was the response as they don't have a letter format to cover my inquiry.
So diarised the conversastion with date, time and names of people I spoke to.

I checked with cumis, they said it didn't matter where we were traveling within Australia or for how long, as long as it was under 12 months (longer periods would have to be re notified for admin purposes) and our billing address remained constantly the same as our home address, then it would be fine, never thought of this before
