Cleaning Awnning

Has anyone got tips for cleaning mildew from an awning?
Wound ours out this weekend down at Rapid Bay and was covered in mildew, bit concerned about using mould remover on it.

Change of subject a bit
If anyone is looking for cheap camping down the south coast you can't beat Rapid Bay. $5ppn, toilet block, rain water tanks, nice place to chill out. Nice open and level area right on the foreshore. Not much shade and i reckon it could be a bit blowly at times.

Took the rods down to try my luck, never got around to it though.
Met 3 other campers who were ex Navy and JR's  to boot and so had a few ales and a chin wag
For those who don't know, JR= Junior Recruit enlisting at 16 and supposed to be the future senior nco's and officers.

The council is replacing the old jetty that was severly damaged in a storm a couple of years ago and there is a sign up that pile driving will be carried out 7-am-7pm seven days a week, none happened while we were there. Was talking to a bloke who had been there a week and the noise wasn't a problem.
Place filled up yesterday afternoon with teenagers and we thought ,not much sleep tonight but by 11pm all was quite. Well done guys showing respect for others staying there.

RE: Cleaning Awning

thanks for that gary could be a good little spot in future, here is one that I found

1. First, kill the mold. 2. Brush the mold and mildew from the material. 3. Wash the affected area with a solution made up of 1/2 cup Lysol to a gallon of hot water. 4. And/or rinse with a solution of 1 cup of lemon juice and 1 cup of salt to a gallon of hot water. 5. Allow the material to dry in the sun. 6. Next, bleach the mildew stain. 7. Wash or soak the affected area with one of the following, depending on the material. 8. For most fabrics, you can use a non-chlorine bleach. 9. For colored fabrics, use a solution of 1 cup of lemon juice and 1 cup of salt to a gallon of hot water. 10. For color safe fabrics, use a solution of 2 tablespoons of bleach to a quart of water. 11. Allow the bleached area to dry thoroughly. Tips: 1. Brush the materials outdoors . 2. Be sure your camping gear is dry before stowing it away.

I also found rubbing alcohol to work as well just rinse it off thoroughly

Mold spores on fabrics and polyurethanes (plastics) is common.  The best remover I have found is good old fashioned domestos.  It has inbuilt anti-fungus properties.  Using standard domestos mix up a ten to fifteen percent solution with water and then apply solution with a brush.  Allow to dry, then neutralise with water.

Cheers
Frank

Gary

I am one of those that does not use chemicals, unless my back is to the wall. In your situation, I would use Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2).

Long story re H2O2, but it occurs naturally, and can be purchased at any Chemist. It kills any mould, and should be (my opinion) the only disinfectant used around the home.

For stain removal, Bi Carb sprinkled on and then Vinagar splashed on top.

I have a spray bottle of H2O2, at 6% that I used, though I know if you buy it from the chemist, it can be expensive, so I have purchased bulk at 50% and dilute.

If you go to BCF or your local boat dealer they have specific non harsh chemical cleaning products for use on boat canopies .

I use one I get from BCF to wash the boat canopy and it works good I just scrub it on and hose it off for the more stubborn areas of mildew it may take a couple of hits Like most spores once there they will return regardless of what you use to kill the little buggers

My problem has to do with stains on the underside. I foolishly rolled it away last time and obviously there were some leaves trapped in the roll. Now I have a two year old awning with stains on the white underside. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.
