As I promised here are a few cunning little bits of software to help you maintain your privacy ONLINE. It wont stop your posts being copied and pasted elsewhere but they do help you keeps some control over your Internet presence.
The first one Ccleaner is a very good finder of crap that seems to somehow end up on your PC There are a couple of selections for you to use the general cleaner and the registry cleaner. Its fairly idiot proof so I use and would recommend you use it, Dont be alarmed if it wants to delete 100s of MB of your Hard drive, its crap that it has found.
This one Advanced Windows Care Personal is extremely good in finding spyware, tracking cookies et cetera. Simple and quick to scan and clean up problems too
Now for ultimate on line privacy Id suggest you use TOR. It does work best and is automatically integrated into Firefox but can be manually set up to use Internet Explorer. They are basically the same and I have now stopped using IE that I am used to Firefox. Have a look at the site and read through it. I have found its slows things down but it does work and it stops identity theft in its tracks. Some sites dont like it, especially dodgy sites as it stops the cookies and getting your details.
Anti Virus Software is essential and I use AVG free version. Since using it I have not had a virus get onto my machine, it has caught and foiled many as well as Trojans and spyware. Set it to run scheduled scans and auto updates.
Firewalls. These days they are a waste of time really the hackers work out how to defeat them as soon as they are upgraded and offer little protection except from perhaps the idly curious.
I run all the above, all the time. Maybe Im paranoid. I would not normally recommend any software but this free stuff does what it claims so you cant sue me for the advice as you could if I suggested you pay for something that did not work.

Agree Firefox is the way to go . I also use PC-Cillian as my auto scanner of incoming and outgoing mail .
While the freebies are great you get what you pay for. Prior I always used Nortons , what a "B" waste of space that was , paid through the eye teeth and got nothing in the way of protection I think it came with a virus magnet as it seemed to pick up let everything in and scanned/ rejected nothing .
I run three units so I signed up for the big package of PC-cillian to have the same on all my gear and after 12 months have not had one hint of trouble ( touch wood ) . Would have to look up the exact pricing but it wasn't that great

I'll answer, no one else seems to want to... There is no real gain in switching your modem on & off as you need it. If, however, you find that when you do this that the net runs like greased lightening and then slows down you can be certain that this is virus like activity and the only solution is issue those immortal commands "Format X' where X is the name of your hard drive. Also when you do this go throught the proceedure of deleting and creating any partitions as this will ensure no little virusesssss can hide from your attack.... PM me if you want more info.

Though I've had no problems with AVG 8 I have heard that Grisoft have infact issued an updated version.... I feel that free software is often more efficient than the stuff you pay for, certainly better value for money. ROTFL
