we are retired. I want to go on short and long trips with my wife. We have no mechanical skills and little experience with camping. 1 where would i find details of the advantages and disadvatages of various types of vehicles, campervans etc. I havent the foggiest idea whether to use a campervan, a four wheel drive or a camper trailer. 2 is there a site that gives some suggestions for various trips, distances and the best time of the year to go? we would appreciate some advice thanks
G'day Galileo, Smart move would be to try before you buy. Hire a van, camper trailer, and borrow a tent give 'em all a go. Gotta say, we're over the tent thing, too hard packing everything up every time you move on. After a couple of experiences you'll soon figure out what you like and what gear you need. As to 2WD or 4WD, it really depends on what you want to see. You can experience heaps of bush camping in a Holden, but there are some places that I'd only take a 4WD. Having said that, there was a Mazda 323 tagging us all the way through the Flinders Ranges once. The creek crossings were shallow but the roads were pretty rough. I held the ego together by telling myself that they were only doing it because they knew I would be there to pull them out if something went wrong. Hello Galileo. My wife and I are into camping, 4wding, caravaning etc. and have been for many years. We are current members of a Melbourne based 4WD club but previously got around on a diet of Commodore 2wds.
If you are Melb. based, and I hope this doesn't sound like an ego trip, because it's not, but if you wish spend a day or two with us (we are both 56yrs) and we can do a bit of 4wding, nothing scarey, and perhaps give you some little benefit from what we have picked up so far. It's not much but as we often combine camping and vaning maybe we can be of some help to you.
If your not close to Melb. it could be difficult.
In any case hope you can work it out.
