Making the BIG descision

My husband and I are 58 and 60 years old and retired. we have done a fair bit of travel around Australia and overseas in the past few years.
Now we are considering selling our house and buying a motorhome or a fifth wheeler and taking off.
Do people have stories to tell about their experience with selling outright or renting.Do they keep the money aside in order to buy a place later on?
I just love the idea of being free with no concerns about a house and all that entails, but my husband is a bit more cautious and wants to buy a smaller place to return to if we get fed up with being on the road.
I'd love to know what people think worked best for them

i have no personal experiece of selling up but i have some professional financial experience.
i think you would be taking a large and perhaps unnessesary risk in selling up. the costs of selling and rebuying are high and the market has got a habit of moving fast. if you can i would rent out while away-for a lower rent if nessesary to get a responsible tenant and if you can;'put a clause in the lease saying that if you return early then you can get occupancy early-even if you have to pay a smallll penalty. we went overseas and rented out our house and when we came back early we had to rent until we could get the house back.

Friends of ours headed off a month ago for their big trip. Last week that came to an abrupt holt when car and caravan were written off. Luckily they have not sold their home as all they wanted to do was to get home to recover from shock stc. If they had sold their home where would they be, while working out insurance etc. Will be a while before they are ready to head off again, so would be staying with friends and relatives for a fair while!!! Definety something to think about!!!!

We have just started out on our big lap,We sold up and moved out, we now own everything dont pay rates phone bills water bills and the network is growing. I that by sticking together we can become a lobby group for the NFA people we have become by choice.

G'day Leigh. Pamela and I are just about to do what you are thinking about and YES, we spent months and months agonising over do we sell??? Rent it out??? What kind of rig?? We have, we feel, canvassed all reasonable/sensible options. For us selling the house is the ONLY option. No rates, no insurance, no maintainance, no window cleaner, no gardens, no tenants, no managment fees, no worries......... Bung the money into the super and pay yourselves an annuity. If you end up with $1 mil in the super that will pay you something in the area of $100/150,000 pa depending on the aggressiveness of your plan. See your financial advisor. The thought of never owning a home has come up in conversation and I feel, with that kind of income we could rent almost anywhere and still grow our capitol. But, "she who must be obeyed", feels the need to "nest" and that's ok, anything to please the lady who makes my life so much the better. Stay with the forum and let us know what you decide AND WHY. Your words will help others. All the best and travel safely. Taphugs
