12 v compreser fridge

Does turning off a 230 ltr Vitrifrigo fridge whist van is in storage in our garage have a detrimental affect on the fridge.

Not if you dry it out properly and chock the door ajar. It could do damage to your battery however if there is an automatic reversion to battery power and you do not switch that off as well.

My fridge mechanic suggested it should be run for a short while about once per month.

Do you think they unpack them and run them in the shop after they come from the factory and before sale ????
I don't think so!
We turn ours off when not travelling (and leave the door ajar) for 4 to 8 months at a time and have always done so without detriment.

Cheers,
Peter

And yet... the owners manual for my 4WD suggests the air conditioning is run for a few minutes every month or so to keep the seals lubricated, advice I have heard from other quarters too, an air conditioning unit is not radically different to a fridge and I suggest it would do no harm to run your fridge from time-to-time.

 Not remotely similar.

The Danfoss compressors in 12V fridges are a sealed unit, just like your fridge at home.

It has no seals.

Cheers,

Peter

That advice is for refrigeration units where the compressor is driven by an external motor. That applies to our air conditioning units in our vehicles. Modern fridges use a sealed unit so running them periodically is not so important. Sealed units do not have seals where the gas can leak to the outside air.

Fair enough.

That's why I don't usually comment upon refrigeration :)

Thank you for the corrections.
