So ... that's where it all went......

Gday...

Given these figures, it is fairly obvious why there is a 'constant push' to make funding for the 'aged' and 'health' to be made more sustainable. cry I guess we can continue to look forward to hearing how we are such a drain on society. hmm

However, on the same figures ... why is there such a high profile given to the need to curtail spending on the 'unemployed'. confuse

If you add foreign aid and immigration together, that would be a big saving if deleted. No mention of our original inhabitants either. cheers Craig

Interest paid on loans to shore up the Budget is a big number also... Immigration probably includes the Camps on Nauru and Manus..

Another vote for Craig 1, billions of dollars for new submarines & a space base in Arnhem Land.

We're such a pathetic country on a world stage. Our indigenous population have needed massive funding for health, education & housing for decades.

We need to look after our own back yard first. In reality it's our FRONT yard. What a ridiculous long term situation!

As usual nothing of any substance will ever get done. Words are cheap, we'd like to help in a limited way. Priority number one.

I am a bit perplexed. 387,000,000. Thats peanuts. What i would like to see is a total breakdown of spending.

it says Spending for average tax payer but what about all the other expenses, like pollies wages etc. what catagory is that under. And many other expenditures.

would be interesting to c the lot And it would be interesting to know the total monies that come in each year. Guess i am just a bit of an accountant at heart. Enjoy working with figures.

Hi Rocket, had the same thoughts. I think, maybe, you could get some numbers from the Dept of Finance website or perhaps Treasury. They would be at a very high level though.

Rocket add another 3 zero's to that balance, eg. 387,000,000,000 that's
$387 billion.

I not really fussed how much gets spent on the indigenous population provided it was for their benefit an not on all of the fringe industries that surround them that use the funds up mostly in admin costs with not a lot benefit for the people who need it

one example in a remote country town(nsw) mostly indigenous residents government housing needed a coat of paint the contractor brought the labour from Sydney while the locals sat under a tree collecting welfare bye the time they finished painting the houses the first ones where just about ready to be done again I would have thought it would be dollar wise to train a team of locals to do the job as required just think of how much It cost in admin fees to get the job done ex Sydney with all the middle men involved

I reckon the indigenous community should be self sufficient / funded. Anything on indigenous land should be putting royalties into their funding; places like Uluru, mining, electricity poles, phone towers, private railway lines etc. And of course doing their own maintenance on their housing. This requires education and a sense of ownership that lots of social welfare recipients do not understand (or want to understand) regardless of their colour or background.

Kebbin, just that we hear of lots of money being spent and some of it is wasted as there are many unsolved issues relating to the originals. But it must be a small amount if it doesn't get a gurnsey in OP table of spend.
I am with Dogbox about outside waste and the lack of true results. There is an excellent article from Jacinta Nampijinpa Price ( Alice Springs Councillor) in today's Herald Sun. Seems to make a lot of sense to me. Cheers Craig

So the average tax payer contributes $11427.
What do companies pay. Strange that's missing.

Gday...

Are you sure about that Dogbox?

I am aware Fortesque Metals Group  has joined with ANZ to provide upto $50Million as 'finance' (loans) for indigenous businesses that work with, for or want to work with, for Fortesque.

http://www.fmgl.com.au/in-the-news/media-releases/2017/09/29/fortescue-and-anz-launch-new-funding-model-to-support-aboriginal-businesses

Are ya able to find a link to the article you refer to where Fortesque is going to spend $2billion actually EMPLOYING businesses/contractors/employees?

Cheers - John

fortescue's billion opportunities program has awarded 250 contracts and subcontracts to107 aboriginal businesses and joint ventures totalling almost $A2.0 billion

that is copy of what is written in their DEC 2017 quarterly report as read form asx release posted on comsec

it also states that 15% of its workforce is aboriginal

TA Dogbox

However, that is $2billion (gross) being awarded to contracts for work to be provided. I am sure you understand that the net profit to the contractors/sub-contractors for that $2billion worth of contracts may only be 10% or so profit - rather than $2billion going to communities ... or even that 10% profit.

Fortescue has always been an active employer of indigenous workers - but wages go to individuals and their families rather to the community's assets/income.

Cheers - John

even if the profit was only 10% still a lot of money an if the companies awarded the contracts are local a lot of that money would be spent locally as opposed to Sydney or perth companies that use fifo expertise an the money goes elsewhere so( as with the example of the painting) the locals are part of it, an less dependant on welfare people start to see the benefits of having a job and money in their pockets the next generation may be the big winners

sounds good to me doggie, just like any other Australian business employing Australians, they get the contract, they employ people, they earn wages, they pay tax, the business pays tax and spends on associated services. No one needs any " sit down money". good on ya Twiggie
