Oxley hwy - gunnedar to pacific hwy

hi everyone,

is the Oxley hwy from gunnedah to the pacific hwy suitable for a three ton off-roader being towed by a BT50. Be doing a trip north from Melbourne mid September to Urunga, NSW.

Would really appreciate advice from people who have done this route before, or any other route to Urunga.

Cheers

 Hi Goldman.

Yes it is.

It is one of the best drives as is a lot of roads down off the Great Deviding Range, the Oxley is very scenic with ups and downs, lots of corners.

2 things I would recommend doing after leaving Tamworth, after you climb the first Moombi hill turn left into the lookout, great experience, the view awesome, possibly use it as a overnighter.

2nd thing is at Bendermere there is a great camp in the rodeo ground, turn left next to the caravan park, a donation required, a pleasant stop, short walk to the pub for good food.

Wauchope showground is good but limited spaces, phone ahead, great town, great camp to explore this area and tgere is plenty to see and do.

I have driven heavy transports all my working life and find most roads are suitable if driven to the conditions, stop and enjoy the scenery and let the world rush bye, there is some good pull off areas a long this road. Allow a couple of hours from Walcha to Wauchope.

Walcha is nice town but can be a bit expensive in the caravan park there. Very modern.

Urunga is a nice spot with lots to do.

Enjoy.

Thanks Radar,

It's great to be able to feed off the experience of others who have so much to give.

This will be an approx. 6 week trip, returning from the Sunshine Coast (after Urunga), down the newell hwy to Orange for a rellies visit, then home.

not long now,

cheers

Hi there, new to the group.

Alternatively, what is the Oxley highway like going back the other way from Port Macquarie to Walcha, I'm fully aware of the winding side of it, more the steepness.

Yes it's good 2 lane road with lots of bend , Its has advisory speed signs on it if you follow these signs and drive to conditions you will have no problems .
