We are thinking about travelling along the Donehue & Plenty highways from Boulia to Alice Springs, we have a 24ft. van behind the Jeep. Could anyone tell me if road is OK for this? We would be travelling end of June early July & time to cover the approx. 700 kms isn't a factor as we are not in a hurry.
You do not say if you have a standard on sealed road van, a semi off roader, or what.
You might manage it in a standard van if it is not long after the road graded.
Problem is that quite often the section in one state will be quite good and that in the other pretty corrugated etc. They do not seem to co-ordinate the road works all that well!
You will have about 650kms of unsealed from just north of Boulia to Gemtree - sealed after that. May be some sections sealed through floodways etc.
Could do it with stops at places like Jervois and Gemtree - 2 nights, 3 days - fairly comfortably.
Closer to time, could try phoning the caravan park at Gemtree, Jervois Station, shire at Boulia (or police?) for comments on state of road.
On the other end (over the border into Qld), the Plenty can be rough but the Donoghue is generally worse - complete with lots of trucks too. Check with Tobermory Station or the Police at Cloncurry, Jervois & Alice Springs. But yes, generally the police/local councils offer the best info.
It might pay to have a few spare bolts/nuts/wahers on hand as well as shock absorber bushes.
And if you keep going towards Winton, stop in for a chat & sandwich at Middleton.
