The Breakaways - a surprising highlight of our visit to Coober Pedy

Despite an overcast day we did a tour out through the opal fields to the Breakaways. Used in many films including "Mad Max", this intriguing landscape revealed its full glory as the sun broke through on the western horizon. Highly recommend a visit here if you pass through Coober Pedy.

Lovely photos. Have heard of the Breakaways but not been there. Is something I'd like to see. Thanks.

Many thanks to those who have responded so positively to my photographs on this site.. As we travel we see and photograph such amazing places. After the trip I find I have added lots of new shots to the computer and there they basically sit never to be seen again. ( Remember when we used to get family and friends around for a "slide night" and spend the night describing what was in the over and under exposed slides or pausing the show to invert the upside down slides etc.)

I have produced quite a few trip books but find the expense is now out of reach. These took hours to prepare and the kids would flip through them in seconds and say deep and meaningful things like, "Yeah." Not everyone is interested in where you went for a holiday while they were at work

I enjoy this site because it provides an opportunity to share some wonderful aspects of Australian life with people who enjoy the country and caravanning as much as we do. It is just finding the balance between sharing some memories and exposing others to the modern equivalent of a "slide night."

Thanks again for those who have given positive feedback.

Regards, Ken

Great pictures Ken. We will be there in a couple of weeks and plan to visit the breakaways. Were you at a designated "lookout"? If not is it easy to find the high spot you were at?

Thanks for the comments Dougwe and Col.
Col we stayed at The Oasis Cp (highly recommended but an early booking would get you a covered site) and the manager runs local tours. George has great knowledge of the area and provides sunset refreshments. Although he has a minibus, there were only four of us so did it in his Cruiser. Given the corrugations I was pleased we weren't in our non 4WD. You can do the tour in your own vehicle but you have to purchase a permit to enter the reserve. The Tourist Office (Council) sell these. They also give out excellent maps and will show you the best places to view etc. It is an extremely good service. We were told our guide took us to areas the public couldn't go but don't recall any gates, barriers or signs etc. Better that you get local knowledge however once you get there. Travel safely and enjoy!
Regards, Ken

Ken, thank you. You have reminded us of one our most favouritest spots in Australia.  See our pic, you might see why!

Our fur baby was so excited there were no prickles, no leads required, no longer in the 4wd (briefly). He has since passed on, but this is one of our favourite photos.

Great photos Ken,

We visited Cooper Pedy from Tassie in 2013 in our campervan & took a day long organised bus tour with no on board toilet facilities  around the highlights of the  area which included the spectacular Breakaways. If anyone is considering a bus tour of this outback area I suggest they ask about toilet stops as there are few trees & one of our poor fellow travellers, when the urgent need arose, refused to pee behind the bus or any where else at the Breakaways & it was still a long bumpy trip back to Cooper Pedy with various other site stops along the way which also had no toilets .lol

David.
