POSITION of JAYCO JOCKEY WHEEL

Hi all,

Went over to Jayco in Sydney today to check out a few things on simular vans to our new vans arrival in December.

Many of the vans in the yard, have the jockey wheel brackets, welded to the outside of the A frame. The 2015 models now have the same welded to the centre of the A frame. I assume for better balance / strength.

My query is that I want to use a ratchet jockey wheel,  to manoeuvre our van  when uncupeled from the wagon in all directions.

Does anyone have a ratchet jockey wheel in the centre, and is it unobstructed in this location, to use with the extension arm without contacting the A frame.

OR will I have to add a second bracket to the outside of the A frame for ease of operation.

Regards Jim

So Jayco have become one of the more enlightened builders have they?

Back in the 90s when the more switched on builders started putting the jockey wheel clamp on the cross member, a lot of them were also putting an extra clamp on the outside of the drawbar specifically for power wheel use. Power wheels were bigger sellers back then.

Bolt on clamps are available - I put one on the other side of the 'A' frame for the same reasons as Jim; to use a ratchet jockey wheel. Having separate clamps makes it easier to change the jockey wheels from one to the other.

Hi Murray & Peter,

I might ask Jayco to weld an additional bracket to the outside of the A- frame before it comes onto the assembly line. Because I will be using the ratchet wheel in tamden with two sets of go jacks to turn the van on its own axis, to make it a simple excise for me. I want to tow the van in forwards (My Driveway is 2.9mtr wide between house and fence.) (Van 2470mm total.) till I get into the back yard (plenty of room) to rotate on flat concrete. Then park it in the 9 mtr deep man cave. Thanks for your replys.

Jim

Jim - have you had a look at the type of caravan mover that bolts next to each wheel and is permanent - goes up grassy slopes etc and will turn van in it's own length. You would not have to attach the ratchet wheel etc, just use a remote control to operate. Cost under $1400.

Hi Dennis,

 Yes I have.

I brought two sets of go jacks on sale 4 weeks back from Repco for $400 less then half price. Then last week the ratchet jockey wheel on sale Repco $117 half price with a rating of moving 2 ton and 350kg on the wheel.

It comes down to $$$$$ we are wanting to semi retire July 2016.The go jacks were intended to move the boat side ways inside the shed. As the main rolla door is 3mtr x H,  2.7mtr X Wide. The other two doors are standard.

I built the shed back in 2000 to work from home. Now its slowly becoming my man cave.

Regards Jim

My 2004 Millard has clamps at both locations I have a plated foot which I use in the center location as in some parks The van won't level with the jockey wheel so I use the plated foot to raise the van while I completely remove the wheel . Has the added advantage of making it more difficult for the low lifes to move the rig without the right socket ratchet

Talking to a longtime Jayco owner and he told me the center mount wheel is so you can the load levellers on . Apparently with the outside chassis mount the load levellers can't be attached Don't know if that's it
