Centrelink.

Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has rented their home and gone travelling. How does Centrelink veiw the income from the rent?

do they deem the amount or hit you the full monty? Does the Pension suffer much? I look forward to some informed comments.

Thanks Doug.

Why not talk with Centrelink and then you will get the right info direct from the horses mouth. If you make an appointment with a Centrelink financial advisor they can advise you as to the outcome of a number of scenario's and the effect it will have on your pension, this is different for every pensioner according to their assets and income, so the correct advice can only come from Centrelink.
Cheers

a couple can earn up to $284 per fortnight and still receive a full pension - anything over $284 and you lose $.50c in every dollar. Rent from a property is treated as income and added to any other income received ie. share dividends, term deposit etc. - any costs (agents fees or maintenance) are not deducted from this amount
But to get the full picture an appointment with Centrelink is really important.

People are well meaning but at the end I would take the abovementioned advice. Well meaning people wont get in trouble for wrong advice, YOU WILL.

True. everyone's circumstances are different.  Seek their advice.

I was told if I rented my house, I'd be classified as homeless!!!

As long as they keep sponsoring me, I'm happy to keep my distance, long queues, with limited staff having long conversations while frustrated customers wait.

You have to ring and make an appointment to see a Centrelink financial advisor, it is no good just calling in at the office, as even then you will have to phone to make a time and it usually takes weeks to get in, but it is well worth it as they are very helpful and strive to get you your maximum benefits.

I have always found in my dealings with Centrelink that there advice has been of great help, especially their Financial Advisors they tried hard to see that we obtain the maximum benefits that are available to us according to our assets and income, I cannot say the same about some private financial advisors who's main aim seems to be, to extract the most benefits for their own pocket.
So tell me Henry1 if you don't talk to Centrelink who do you go to for the right advice re your pension entitlements?
Cheers

The Centrelink Financial Advisor that we made an appointment with 2 years ago was absolutely the best bloke we ever spoke to about our finances. The Superannuation company's representative was only interested in his commission, as was the Bank Bloke.

Thanks to this Centrelink FA we successfully applied for a pension and we have never had a problem since, always been treated respectfully when we went into an office for any reason.

If you are getting conflicting information Henry1 you are talking to the wrong person.

Make an appointment to see a FIO at Centrelink DJR, and Henry1!
