Caravan & Car Insurance

Hello,
My wife and I are going to be joining the travelling bug show that some people seam to get.
We plan to plan to buy a 4 x 4 single cab Ute with a fully enclosed canopy for the dog which will be towing a caravan that is going to be fully self contained with shower etc.
Anyone with information regarding insurance in this area that can be passed on will greatly be appreciated.

Kind Regards
Glenn

We got the best deal through CIL, which included going over the ferry to Tasmania, some insurance companies won't cover that. So whichever one you choose make sure it covers accommodation if you need it in the even of an accident and towing of your van interstate.

Good luck, we found this part a headache.

Hi Dizzy, welcome to the playground

We are with CIL as well, we cant speak highly enough about them. They do what they say they will do with no arguments or silly business.

Safe travels

ditto, ditto and ditto.  Our only claim with CIL in 3 1/2 years handled promptly, no questions asked, only $200 excess.

I joined the CMCA about 7 years ago for their cheaper insurance which covered both caravan and 4x4. The annual cost for the CMCA is still $40 p.a but there are great benefits that come with it. I did a ring around earlier this year for a better price but couldn't find one. This is for both van and tug. I pay quarterly which doesn't incur any penalties.

Best of luck with your search. It is time consuming.
Regards Chris

To be honest, I can not see us leaving NRMA anytime soon!  I worked for an insurance broker so I can confidently say I can read a PDS and can call on years of experience. We have all our insurance with NRMA (2 cars, 2 CTPs, home and contents, full road service) except our camper which is with CIL and every year I check the market before renewing any policy and every year NRMA remain the best.  This year was slightly different ......... I renewed the camper with CIL thinking what the heck - I got it still with my staff discount, ie. netted of commission and no fee, so no company will be cheaper!  Low and behold when I paid the local NRMA for a couple of policies due I got them to quote on the camper ........ you guessed it - I could have got it cheaper by $150 with NRMA with comparable cover - was too late to change this year, but next year it will go with NRMA.  I have had claims and can not fault them for their service and professionalism!  The lesson here is loyalty discounts which insurance companies are now starting to look at because more and more of their policy holders are moving away for small savings and not looking at the bigger picture.  Of course, everyone's circumstances are different, but do your homework and look at the bigger picture. Without the loyalty discounts with NRMA I could have got everything cheaper elsewhere!  Yes, loyalty discounts give the insurer a "captive audience", but if the ticket is cheapest, I'll attend their show!  Just my experience.

I had all my insurances with SGIO (6 of them covering motor vehicles and house etc). They happily offer caravan type insurance but don't cover many items that may get stolen from inside it - like laptops, Ipads etc - make sure you ask all these questions or better still ask your insurance company to send you out their PDF (usually like a small car handbook) which tells you exactly what they do and DONT cover.

I have my van insured with CIL. Premiums a little cheaper than SGIO but they DONT insure motor vehicles like your tow vehicle, even though they will insure motorhomes (both have motors in them, so go figure that out)

Whoever you choose, be careful of what they don't cover and any extra excess they may apply to a claim - get their PDF (they will post you one with the policy and you have a 30 day cooling off period when you can cancel and get a full refund of what you have paid) or ask them if their PDF (policy disclosure form which is required by law) is on-line so you can read it before making your decision.

I am told CMCA (see vanmans post) is good - and they do cover both van and tow vehicle. I shall be comparing them against CIL when my policy is due to expire next year

Back in August my van was broken into via the door being jimmied open . TV , an Engel and a few other bits and pieces were stolen that I could see , door was wrecked as well . Rang SGIC and was told to get quotes or links to what had been stolen and see a repairer re the door . Within a week it had all been sorted out and money paid into the bank for all the items stolen except for the full amount for the Engel due to a $1000.00 limit per item . While packing to go away middle of October I notice that my coax stripper and crimper was missing , so I replaced them . Went to set up the dish etc when I find the sat finder, SBT was gone as well . Bugger I thought , relaced that stuff as well . Then talking to a friend about it and it was suggested I contact SGIC again which I did last week and they told me to send them the invoice,s . I got a phone call this morning to say the claim had been approved for the full amount .
