Looks like the only mods for racing is the removal of the hubcaps and tape over the headlights, and look how many are registered, otherwise it is what was driven on the road.
But look at the track, wooden fences, trees and power poles on the edge of the road and patch work bitumen.
A Triumph on pole, mixing it with Ford Cortinas and EH Holdens. I think it was called the Armstrong 500 in those days.
Its a long time since a Hillman Imp raced at Bathurst.
Back in the days when they raced real cars, not super modified thoroughbreds as today. As JC stated "make against make". Mate back then had a Hillman Imp GT that we hooned around the track. Got me beat how the race drivers could corner at the speeds they were doing. We couldn't even come close.

Great shot of Ron Hodgson's GT Cortina thru the dipper and Warren Weldons Holden EH S4....ah they were indeed the days. Drive 'em there race "em and drive 'em home!!
Bathurst is special no matter what they race up there..
It's more about the teams and drivers these days..
1964 was way before hybrid factory cars which forced them to go Cotf design ..
We where up there again this year..
Only done the Esses Hillclimb there , that was fast enough , I think I still have the record there for U2ltr Sports Sedans . Driven the camper around the track , And towed my mates camper up mountain straight .
I used to Flag Marshall there from 1965 to 1969, then went overseas for nearly three years - the whole system had changed when I got back home - I met a girl (my wife of 40 years) and that ended my active motor sport days ! Great memories ! To see George Garth fling his Lotus Cortina through The Dipper on two wheels nearly every lap was a memory forever held !!!

Wondering about ShortNorth ? - Short North is the railwayman's nickname for the NSWGR main line between Sydney and Newcastle
Those were the days when Bathurst was at its most enjoyable. A true reflection of 'What raced on Sunday sold on Monday'. Not the crap they have these days.
Larry
these days its just another v8 car race you see any Saturday on TV.
as soon as officialdom get there hands on things they stuff it up big time .
bring back the real Bathurst 500
I think the first year I went was 1966, Loved it and kept going back for 11 years straight. I wish they would bring back production car racing as at least you could buy it at the dealer. We were walking around the car park one trip and a fellow in a mini had a very rough idle like it had a 3/4 race cam in it.
I casually said to him to push his choke in, Boy did he get upset. We all took it very seriously. In them days I was a Holden man.
Ah they had production car racing.. Remember it took over from group A ? Then went broke.. That's why the V8's don't race over the long weekend.. Btw there is a 12 hour production race .. From memory the Mitsi Evo won it?
edit NA Ferrari..
