Now at Julia Creek, Queensland

We're spending a couple of nights at the free RV campground here.  No facilities apart from good artesian water being available but nice spot.  Dump points available in town. Good Telstra phone & internet.  The info centre here is interesting, interactive video displays about the area plus Digby, a Julia Creek Dunnart (special type unique to this area) viewing at feeding times twice daily.  Campsite even has a bitumen walkway into town, ideal for my fold up electric Travelscoot when I take the dogs for a walk.  Intend leaving here tomorrow, hoping to spend tomorrow night at Fountain Springs rest area between Cloncurry & Mt. Isa.

You are moving well, I haven't travelled between Hughenden and Cloncurry so have missed that location. Sounds good.

Gday...

I really liked Julia Creek camp too. The town is very friendly and welcoming and the Info Centre display is certainly intriguing - spent a few hours there.

I also stayed at the Fountain Springs rest area. A good spot too especially if you get right back off the road and get there early. It does get very busy and crowded.

If you get there early then take the time to visit the actual Fountain Springs. There is a big signboard at the rest area showing you how to get there. The road is (or at least was) a good unsealed road would suit 2-wheel drive vehicles. The scenery on the way in is just as good as getting to the Fountain Springs.

I left my van at the rest area while I drove into Fountain Springs and as it was right back off the road it was pretty safe.

Here are some photos to whet your appetite.

Cheers - John

We went to Fountain Springs itself last year when we camped at Corella Dam, John. Lovely spot as you say. Found an olive python about 2 metres long curled up in the feeder spring Above the main pool. Odd, thought it would have been too cold for him but obviously not.

Hi Old boar, please tell why you need facilities as this FREE camp is for Self Contained RV's only as I am postitive that Felix the Camp Host would have told you, the Julia Creek Camp Ground is only a few hundred yards up that sealed road with all facilities at $17 per night

What the hell are you on about? At no stage did I say we needed facilities, I merely placed that fact in the post for the benefit of other free campers that may not be self contained.  As I also stated it's good, been in many others that are better, hence not waxing quite as lyrical as someone that obviously hasn't been to the others.

Hi Old Boar,
Interesred to read you have a travelscoot.Have been looking at getting one for those quick trips when one has set up camp. How do you charge yours when out of 240v area .Do you use a genny? or is there a 12v alternative
They appear compact and light.and easy to handle.Do you have any tips, advice on where to purchase
Thanks,

Hi Mary. Have only had the Travelscoot for a few weeks but in love with it. Only downfall I've found is that, with only one drive wheel (left rear) life can get a tad hairy on fine loose gravel or powdery black soil. If it doesn't get bogged, it tends to make it's own mind up where to go, lol. Firm surfaces, even compacted soil, great little piece of gear. When away from mains power charging via the battery through an inverter is feasible but considering the time concerned not very practical as it would require heaps of battery capacity. Hence, I just run my generator in Eco mode during the middle of the day to minimise inconvenience to others when charging is required. I charge mine after each two or three short runs to minimise charging time. Being a Lithium battery, it can be charged at any stage without ill effects. For travellers, particularly full time travellers like myself, I don't believe a better mobility aid exists.

Hey - if we all get one, we can have "The Grey Nomads Derby" at Greens Lake, instead of Melbourne Cup Celebrations - or as well as, of course!!! Can just see some of GN's handling the slippery roads at Greens after rain!!!!!!

Hi Oldbore We were at the sring last year to and also found a large snake in the feeder spring. Seems it likes laying in the water there as some other campers at the dam told us they had seen it there the day before.
