Big trip with Ruby (Whippet)

We are setting off in July and plan to go up the centre and down the WA coast, so 1/2 a lap.  Any suggestions of dog friendly places, free camping or other advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Judith and Peter

Hallo Ruby and peoples, this is Annie and I am owned by 2 Whippets and we travel in our motorhome at present full time. We do know a bit about the trip 'up the middle' as until a couple of years ago we were living in Darwin and we travelled up and down quite often. Not sure where you are starting from or if you are travelling fast or slow, the boys and I travel slow so as I get to see everything! There a number of good places to stop and exercise one's Whippet on the way to the Alice I will do the list for you when I am on my computer as I find this tablet a bit tiresome to type on! So pleased to have another Whippet here, the boys would love a play date some time! Annie

Hi Annie,  We are planning to take about three months and will be leaving from Ballarat in Victoria.  Ruby loves going away in the van and we often go away with our daughter and her family including Bindi and Maggie (whippets).  We could leave Ruby with her but decided we would miss her too much.

Oh no, don't leave Ruby behind! Whippets. love being on the road and if Ruby is anything like Clancy and Connor especially like coffee shops and bakeries!
We are Victoria based too, my boys come from Ballarat area and Inverleigh.
So from Ballarat I usually take an overnight stop at the rest area at
Locheil, just the other side of Dimboola, great walking track out the back. I have often pulled up right in Adelaide beside the Seth East parklands-good places to run dogs, and Adelaide markets-best food markets!
Next stop usually the motorhome park in Pt Augusta, low fee, stock up on food and top up water tanks.
On Stuart Hwy - Woomera, Lake Hart-Coober Pedy(I wouldn't let Ruby off there)Carney Park campground, do a side trip down the painted hills road, Marla Roadhouse campground-i always stop here so the boys can play on the grass oval in the little township!
From Marla I usually do a drive through to Finke rest area but you may want to visit Ayres Rock and the Kings Canyon Loop...
After that it is a straight run through to Alice.
When I was travelling up and down I just timed it to get to Alice early, park up and do whatever I wanted to do and fuel up then get up to Aileron roadhouse to camp for the night or 2. Alice is a great place with lots to see and do but not the most dog friendly place-try contacting Dogs NT Alice Springs and see if they will let you run your Ruby at the dog club if you are staying in town any length of time.
If you would like any more info pm me

image.jpgHi Annie, Thank you very much for the info we are really looking forward. At the moment I am knitting Ruby a new jumper to take away so I hope it works out ok.  I have attached a photo of Ruby (right) with her friends Bindi and Maggie.

Safe travelling

How are your plans for 'half the block' going? That would be a bit of a rushed trip in 3 Months! I left from Darwin and it took me 7 months and I still didn't see a lot of what I wanted too....

Plans for the trip are going ok. We are just going to play it by ear and not make any definite plans as to when and where we have to be. Pete is retired and when we get back I will probably stop work as well so we have lots of travelling ahead of us.

I made Ruby a new coat at the weekend and want to make a couple more before we go.  We are really looking forward to the trip.

Regards

Judith

Wow! That is a pretty good coat, I tried to make coats for my boys and whilst they are OK to wear as jamas in the van they are to big to walk out in...have found a very reasonably priced collection of coats made by a lady who raises funds for greyhound rescue.

How do you get your whippets to keep their coats on? I can't get Cruiser to wear one even at -3 in winter in Canberra. Cheers, Anne

Hi Anne, Can't really help you because Ruby loves her coat on. I've knitted jumpers they are more fitted and would be hard to get off. I got the pattern off the internet, it was called Darling Darby and was free. Bindi has one on in the photo. We are from Ballarat so know how cold it can get for your whippet kids.

Regards

Judith

Thanks anyway, Judith. Darling Darby was the pattern I used too. She just hated it, which I thought was unfair after all the hours it took to knit! Oh, well. It just means that she is Velcro-dog when it is cold, so just as well I like her cuddles.

Happy travels,

Anne
