Rear View Cam and Porta Potti Cracks

Can't find the threads about rear view cams and porta potti cracks so I thought I'd combine the two. My auto sparky fitted the rear view cam yesterday - a wireless one. He was very professional - threaded the wiring out of sight behind the hood lining and door frame trim out through a grommet at the back of the cab and along the chassis to the rear of the truck. He also wired the cam to the ignition so that it turns on permanently while driving (or on accessories).

While he was here, I got him to drill a small hole at the top of the crack in my porta potti cover. I haven't super glued the crack yet but I will. Meanwhile, I wrote about it all on my blog and my Texas mate (who suggested the hole in the crack trick) took my pic of the rear view mirror and photoshopped it. He's gonna lead me astray, that bloke.

Those visible cracks have a hole in them & the cracks don't spread any further. biggrinnodisbelief

Gary - any chance of a pic of how the monitor clips to the rear view mirror and also does it vibrate or does the extra weight of it make the thing go out of adjustment.
Thanks

Denis

Hako - there are four plastic clips at the back of the monitor that clip onto the existing mirror. However, my mirror was a bit small so the auto sparky used an old bicycle tube (which I had in the garage) to cut a few wedges that fill the gaps. It works fine - doesn't rattle or move but is still easy to remove if needed. The monitor can't go out of adjustment because the camera at the back of the truck is fixed. No matter which way you move the monitor (or mirror) the image stays the same.

Good and interesting post Gary.
Thinking of adding one to my Landy. Also a camera system facing forward with recording facility.

Thanks Gary - makes sense. I had a wireless one in my old Jag over 10 years ago but it picked up security camera outputs every time we drove through the bad part of town. I guess they're more sophisticated nowdays. Bithdays coming up so I might shout myself one that has the front camera on as well.

Regards

Denis

I've just come back from the shopping mall car park. Before the cam, I parked in a "drive-through" so I didn't have to reverse. Today I parked in a regular spot and it was a breeze to reverse with a clear view of what was behind. Crushed the old lady's trolley but she was fine... and the groceries were okay. Hehe. Nah... just kidding about the old lady.

Gary - just a few questions - where is the rear camera located - and what sort of view does it have and do you think there is an ideal position or have you achieved it.
Thanks

Denis

Hako...

rearview-cam 003.JPG

That's in the center of the tray, directly above the tow bar. It provides a great wide-angle view but I'm gonna have to move it because it gets in the way of the bicycle rack which sits on the tow ball. I won't move it far though... a little to the left or the right depending on what the view is like.

Yes, valnrob... they're obviously not GNs hehe. I dunno about your buns but mine have plummeted due to gravity.

And Hako, I think you meant does the weight of the clip-on affect the adjustment of the mirror. It may if the ball joint is a bit loose but mine is fine.

Thanks Gary for taking the trouble to take pics - much appreciated. I'd have preferred the original view in the mirror to be a couple of hot chicks but I suppose you've got to cater for the opposite sex as well as us old pervs.

Thanks again.
