I was surprised that they did the marriage thing - a Civil Union has been legal in NZ for years but obviously wasnt enough? I like the email going around reminding people that it is the straight people who breed gay children!

Only straight people can have children !!!! Very hot touchy topic. Thank goodness we now live in a society that allows gays to come out of the closet, instead of living a stressful lie all their life. People attracted to their same sex is just a quirk of mother nature.....

I had friends at school who committed suicide or had nervous breakdowns because of their perceived sexuality, so sad.

Funny how the media is biased towards gay women and not men ??? What does that say about us as a culture ?

I agree Gary Maurice Williams speech was very funny and absolutely true. May be now this bill will pave the way for more pride and happiness in the world. Parents may now be able to display pride in their kids and gay people will be allowed to simply be proud and happy.

My fathers older brother suicided in the early 1900's. Father barely remembered him, he was only little at the time, but he said his brother, a teenager, was "effeminate". So sad.

As to a "quirk" of nature... I think it's just that nature doesn't discriminate between the sexes. As one academic put it, sex isn't black and white, it's a spectrum.

And thanks for speaking up, Michelle. I wasn't quite sure how to handle that one.

Yes Gary great post, glad to see such support from this forum , Not only is this great for our Gay people but parents of gay people we have friends who have a Gay child and had found it very had to accept because of public opinion , One would hope the people that make fun of issue start to think before making wise cracks

An old friend was ill, and his wife was with him to deal with the health care services and the doctors. When he died, she planned his funeral with some financial help from Centrelink to pay for it. Not all marriages are religious events, and therefore they are "civil" unions.

Allowing same sex couples to use the term "marriage" will cost straight couples nothing, nothing at all. It will not change YOUR relationship. As the kiwi said, the sun will rise tomorrow and life will go on.

Not all straight people want to marry and neither do all same sex couples. But some do, and of these, some are successful and some are not.

Restricting the use of the word "marriage" is pedantic.

In this instance Brickies I agree totally with you. Young gay people who are too scared to come out should not have to tolerate the opinions of homophobes. My daughter said to me once when she was 16 or 17 yrs old . . .Mum what would you say if I came home and said I was gay? I told her then and have never changed my opinion. Make sure you bring your partners home to meet Dad and I, practise safe sex and don't ever be afraid to stand up and say that you are gay. Her response. . . Shoot, Mum I was only trying to shock you and it backfired lol. But she was so proud of my response she went to her gay friend at school and told him so he could perhaps get the courage to go and tell his parents that he was gay. I love my girls always fighting for the scared.

There was another vid on the link Gary posted. After the bill was declared passed, the entire house of parliament was up on its feet applauding, someone in the gallery started to sing their beautiful Maori song, and they all joined in. Bunches of flowers were being given out. I was so moved I wept.

What a contrast to the Australian politicians who only ever seem to spout hatred and contempt at each other.... any wonder we are so divided about politics.

It amazes me that there are so many differences between Australia and New Zealand, when I had always assumed that kiwis are just like us (except for the speech impediment).

Among the first in the world to allow women's sufferage, indigenous suffrage- and they give the right to vote to anyone with permanent residence (i.e. take your tax money and let you have a say).

I like the kiwi thinking that government should not say no just because they can.............. a big cultural difference that one!

Gary - that was so good to watch - as was the one where all in the parliament gallery stood up to sing - well worth a watch an listen, makes you proud to be a human being.

One of my grandaughters is gay - and I am proud of her for being aware of who she is! There is another in my family who has never really admitted his sexuality, and it has caused him a lot of heartache in his life.

Australia needs to take a leaf out of NZ's book, and give our citizens equality.

I don't know what the big deal is, to be married. Iv'e been married 3 times and my ex partners and I could not get out of it fast enough. Good friends now.
Also am frustrated when a label appears in conversation -homophobe, makes you feel on the outa if you don't agree. Like being called a Racist if you disagree with boat people etc.
I have no objection to people of same sex getting a Civil Union but why a a full marriage? To be the same as straight people? Looking at the divorce rate of hetro's seems a slippery slope to being single and broke.

Why a full marriage, Ontos? So gays can have the same rights and privileges. In other words, to remove discrimination. Remember, marriage is an option, not a requirement. If people of any sexuality don't wanna get married, fine. If they do, fine.
