Jobs for Grey Nomads

Hi out there

It will be a few days to come before we finally hit the road, but we are already planning the big change in lifestyle. One question for us will be "how can we create additional income during our days as Grey Nomads?". I would like to ask the more experienced of you two questions:

1 - How can we "score" a job?
2 - What pay could be expected?

We calculated we would need to earn an extra combined $45,000 (before tax) p.a. to sustain our lifestyle.

Our professional profiles are:

1 - Her: Accountant (CPA) with ample experience in company as well as tax accounting.
2 - Him: IT professional with post grad qualifications, spectrum covers PC and systems planning + setup, network management, have been heading and managing IT departments in industry as well as government. Teaching background as well (was my first profession until I got a decent job. Sorry for that, you teachers).

Any ideas would be highly appreciated.

Cheers
Quokka

Gooday Quokka, dont think you will get much response to your question on this forum, it's pretty quiet in here.

Only a handfull of members.

I read about this site in the west australian newspaper, so thought it would have a lot of activity, but was wrong !!

Thought it would be very popular, seeing as so many grey headed old coote's out there.

Maybe they are all out travelling and dont get to see a PC very often.

Anyway, we have been semi-retired for 4 years and are about to hit the road soon.

We support ourselves by doing some share trading, which can be done at any time, even between trips.

Regards Mike

hi quokka,
We are working as we are travelling and if you are happy to do menial tasks like we have their is work out there. Tractors driving, assistant caravan parks, harvest trail, spud farm Pirelli SA.

Rod was a private certifier/builder and he also picks up handyman work. Work about Australia has jobs going in there.

We have done volunteer work and from there it has led to small jobs.

Never had any problems find work as long as you are not fussy. If you have had a desk job like us, you soon get fit doing the Manuel work.
Look on Gum tree, and some of the other websites.

You can do anything, and have fun doing it.

Good luck Sue

Gday...

 Welcome 02.jpg

Firstly welcome to the forum Quokka.

I have been travelling for six years full-time. I used to work about four to six months a year ... but over the past couple of years I only work for about two months - it gets in the way of enjoying the lifestyle.

Because I spent my working life stuck in stuffy air-conditioned offices (earning a good quid though) I prefer to work outdoors these days - not as much money but a better physical reward.

I have not found any trouble finding work 'outdoors' but from the quals you state, I guess you won't be looking for "harvesting/farm" work Especially if you want $45,000/year. I assume expecting $45,000/year for both (?) of you would mean you are only looking for a few months work each year?.

I reckon you should have absolutely no more trouble getting work in any large-ish city you will travel to or through than you would in Perth (I assume your profile WA location and the quals stated would mean Perth).

But vacancies for part-time/casual accountants/IT Pros/Teachers just might be hard to find away from largish-ish cities. I have met quite a few registered nurses and qualified teachers who find "supply" work - or fill-in work in some towns so you may be lucky.

As for where to look - guess www.seek.com etc and such like where 'professional' positions are advertised may be the best places.

Which ever way it happens, enjoy the travel, see this great, wide beautiful land, and take the time to smell the roses. My philosophy is that "if you want it to happen, and wait for it to happen, it WILL happen"

Cheers - John

PS - Mike may very well have an accurate observation. However, this is actually a pretty active forum with many who will provide comment and advice. Take your time and form your own opinion.

BEERWAH SPORTSGROUND CAMPING AREA near Landsborough Sunshine Coast

Is anyone familiar with this camping facility? I am, it is a great spot for overnight or up to 3 days camping @ $20 per night for access to hot showers, toilets, dump point water and power. Pets allowed. Beautiful area of the Sunshine Coast.
This camping ground will close soon if a manager cannot be found. The Sunshine Coast Council is under pressure from "other vested interests" to close it.
It only reopened in December of last year following issues raised by the "other vested interests".
If anyone would like a "paid holiday", there is a meeting with Council coming up within a couple of weeks to address the matter.
If you can help, Phone number of Beerwah Sportground is 0754940513 lady there is lovely to talk with.
Cheers,
Robyn

haha don't feel bad rocky, I was about to post as well till i saw Mike C's post... but I liked the extra $45,000 bit on top of how much, considering their professional backgrounds? makes you wonder if their lifestyle might have a bit more style than most of us plebs
