Thanks for the input
The problem is now solved
I have removed the lid, and replaced the old vinyl with new marine vinyl from clark rubber, aluminium sheet proved too difficult to source the small size I needed and would have required 2 by curved cuts, I have also replaced the old stabilise gas struts and guess what , the lid now stays open by itself.
The worst part of the job was removing the old contact adhesive used a number of products a lot of scraping and elbow grease until in desperation I tried off the shelf oven cleaner which worked a treat. Who would have thought ?
Does anyone know how to remove the front boot lid (golden eagle pop top) ?
I have removed the gas struts for replacement but cannot work out how to slide the lid off.
I need to replace the shrunken plastic on the door front.
I have tried YouTube but only frustration resulted.
Can anyone help?

I have carried out a remove years and years ago.
I would call your local caravan repairer ( mine would tell you how, also sell a 2nd hand or new boot lid)
From memory there are 3mm round 10mm long metal rods on each end that keep the lid in position.
I think I slightly opened up one end and tapped the top of the lid other end to remove the plug and the lid.
However I would NOT carry out the above without some Technical info from your local repairer.

Managed to remove lid
Quite right there was a plug which knocked out easily.
All I have to do now is clean off the excess old glue and source some sort of new covering, I was thinking 1.6mm aluminium propeller plate.
Any thoughts ?

For $179 plus Freight you could consider a replacement
