I have to admit that I thought there was somewhat of an "odour" around this story but then, I asked myself, for what possible reason?
Couldn't find one.

Yes. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

It's a hoax, plain and simple, oh, wait a minute. perhaps he's easily embarrassed and gave mum a quick call to bring some freshly ironed clothes and a portable shower before being found. Clean nails, no dirt on knees of clothing or backside.
Perhaps he identifies as a cat? they are good at cleaning themselves, so that would make sense.

He never stayed on well used trails, went to different well used ones over and over again. If he had stayed at the hut, where their was water and food , someone would have turned up eventually. It seems a bit fishy, but he might be a dummy, although he is supposed to be an experienced hiker, and he doesn't carry an epirb, that is strange as well.

Must have had some good insect repellent, there are lots of biting and blood sucking insects in that area, day time and their night shift mates.

I can understand why a uni student might not have a $400 EPIRB. However, he did leave a message for the searchers on his camera, but in Indonesian. Perhaps he forgot he was in Australia?

Yep, appears to be a clear case of "Come in suckers"
You get lost for two weeks in the Australian bush, you miraculously survive the harsh conditions by subsisting on two muesli bars, berries and water. You get rescued.
