Listening to pollies, public servants and media comment, in all the discussions not once has there been any comment to or from the social media companies.
I don't see X owner rolling over and giving in, the government is batting zero against X after the e-commissioner's attempt to censor it.
I do believe that these social media platforms are used for bulling and online abuse, but I don't see such a ban would solve the problem.

The Internet is probably already full of how-to tutorials for circumventing any proposed restrictions. I don't think the pollies have any clue. What happened to Morrison's legislation that supposedly mandated that encryption software should have a backdoor for the Australian government? It either won't happen or it won't work.

My suspicion is they'd be unenforceable particularly if the companies concerned close their Australian offices and shift their operations offshore.
Its not as if any Australian Government is going to commit political suicide by blocking Facebook, Instagram, etc in retaliation.

And, as an afterthought, I would have thought that the Government(s) would/should have had more important things to concentrate on than setting mandatory age restrictions on an ecosystem they have zero control over.

I think this legislation is at least a step in the right direction.
Even though the legislation itself may have flaws in it and it may be difficult to enforce, at least something is being done.
On the National Press Club address today, ABC Chairperson Kim Williams did open my eyes a bit with some of his wise words.
He said - there is a tsunami of poison waters of communication all over the world that is infecting the minds of our young people, and all of us.
He indicated there is so much inaccurate and propaganda like information now spreading all over the world that it taints the way we as Australians think and act.
He also mentioned that our young people in this country will be relied upon by we older Australians in the future.
His comments were that we need to inform and educate our young Australians in the truths, facts and proper manner in which to conduct ourselves.
There is truth in his words. One only has to listen to the disgraceful attacks in our senate today from one or two dissidents who make some very un-Australian comments that make their way into our media and in some way influence these disgraceful street marches and protests that fly in the face of the Australian way.
The under 16 legislation may not be ideal at present but maybe we will see more steps in the future to correct so much of this distasteful dialogue coming via the net etc from overseas and now from within?

Heston Russell, Donald Trump, The Voice, Nuclear/Renewable Energy.
Why does this legislation have to be passed by the end of thid week, when it will not come into force untill 2026.
If the social madia companies wont agree to blocking under 16's, then I suppose the government will try Geo blocking these sites, but that easily bypassed with a VPN

I agree.
The govt are taking on a virtually unwinnable task against powerful billionaires with little regard to how Aussies are affected.
Mr Williams did impress me with his views, but he is a smart and very experienced leader in corporate Australia. He proved that today.
Sure, he dodged a lot of questions in the way the ABC conducts itself but there have been a lot of ABC commentators removed recently. Are they cleaning out the cupboard of one-eyed dissidents???
He did disappoint me though when the obvious question came from the gallery, six shots from a helicopter when only one was actually fired. He had a brief, well prepared 15 second answer to the two part question. So in effect he escaped any ridicule in under 20 seconds. That was weak, so is the finding that it was "an error". Yeah right. Five more shots make it onto a clipping, a bit hard to swallow that one but they seem to have got away with it with their "internal investigation".
So, you are probably right, the ABC, all the way to the top may well be hitting us with the very mis-information he claims to be fighting against.
I guess we may have to just get used to it and A.I. is likely to make matters much worse.

Most useless unenforceable piece of garbage to pass through parliament this year.
The sentiment behind it has some merit but really, do these brain dead pollies we seem to continually be lumbered with think that A. The media companies are going to take one bit of notice as most of these are based in another country that Australia has no jurisdiction over and B. How are they remotely going to police this.
This comes down to a parenting issue. Know what your kids are hooking into on the web.
For the rest of us, how are they going to establish age.
I sure won't be putting up drivers licence, passport or credit card details into a social media companies data bank. Too easy to hack by some Russian or Asian scammer

Agree with you, the likely hood of demanding SM companies to stop kids from see this s..t, is those companies not allowing operation in oz, I just hope it, the law does not affect our forums as well.

The fact is that the government tried to do many things during this term, but they were undermined by the opposition. Even their traditional Green allies have sabotaged various legislative efforts, most noticeably one related to housing affordability.

I am waiting for the part where they tell me to fill in all my details so they can tell me just what I can and can't watch.. This is not going to be just for the kids .. I can see this as the narrow part of the wedge to invade my privacy ... Like the old days when they said that I could only buy two bottles of beer.. We drove around until we had a carton.. Now they will want to know everything about you before they allow you to watch certain areas on your computor.. If you pass their screening then they will allow you into that area... It's just an attempt to control not only the young ones.. But everybody .... We all set down boundries for our children and some of them were followed.. I for one know that not all the time I followed the boundries that were set for me... How are they going to verify my details before I go online ? And I just love the arrogance of the way this bill was pushed through..

It seems everytime the dialogue goes away from a particular clique on this site the discussion gets suspiciously closed down.
The "misinformation" bill didn't get up I believe but freedom of speech is still something we all crave but will not achieve.
Must admit though, we are not as bad as the yanks but there are two clear opposites in our joint, although there are some new nasty splinter groups starting to take hold.
Oh well, ho hum, some things never change

Was speaking to a mum with 4 kids under 14 last night, and she couldn't understand how it would work, all her kids have social media accounts,
She suggested most mums would just log them in to avoid tantrums and conflict.

One would think that will be more common than we (or the dumb govt) would expect.
Must admit though, over the years when parents came into an office interview with self and brought their kids, the loose kid was a nightmare.
As time passed 99% of kids would sit there on mummy's phone and not hear a peep from them.
They are good pacifiers.
It was very ill thought out legislation and will prove to be virtually ineffective.
Sure, something had to be done but a token attempt to prevent online bullying, influence, scamming, propaganda etc, this bill does just not cut it.
As to the solution, I must admit, I don't have one and I guess many others don't as well.
As I keep saying to friends around my age, take me back to 01/01/1970 and leave me there.
We have seen the best of it..........

Perhaps the short term solution is no mobile devices with internet/mobiles data allowed on school property for students.
Such a complete ban may prevent online bullying but not prevent face to face bullying at school.
