I actually know someone who lost all his fingers on his right hand on a bench mounted saw. 

Automatic reaction is to hold the piece of timber as it is being pulled into the saw & not let go.

There was was not much left. He still had his thumb, minimal conciliation.

Another person I know had the opposite situation, a rope looped around his thumb... better leave it at that other than to say he has 4 fingers.
