A century or so ago the British navy had open days on their ships so the public could see where their taxes were going. Tours were surprisingly thorough, on the domestic side of running ships, big mistake!
One of the pieces of equipment that caught the attention of house wives.
The ships had labour saving devices so the crew could concentrate on "useful" things like firing guns! Couldn't waste time on on the mundane labour of endless hours of "domestic duties".
It was a bit more difficult in 1909!
