Aaah, the good old days when a massive slice of welding slag fell off and slid straight into your work boot.

Back in 1988 my dad & I did arc & oxy-acetylene welding at TAFE for fun. We got first & second prize for oxy-acetylene welding. I still think my work was better. We should have got first & second for arc welding as well but they couldn't get us all the prizes.
But we were "cheating", we both had the very first of the light sensitive face masks 13x arc & 11x oxy, worth over $800 a piece each at that time. So we had a high advantage over everyone else.
Just made welding so much easier.

I can remember during the early days of my apprenticeship, I was fascinated by this welder, welding the end panels on aircraft fuel tanks, the material was really thin, sitting with the tank held between his knees, he just went around them using tig by hand. The job looked as if it was done by machine. I have never seen a welder repeating that since. I would have called him a master craftsman.
