Which idiot thought it was a good idea to put women in a submarine?
I had a good, male, friend who served on UK nuclear subs and he thought the concept was crazy, I agree.
Men want sex. Beginning and end - always has been, always will be.
Put men and women together in a toothpaste tube for six months and what do you think is going to happen?
I despair at the naivety....

Is it so different to say an aircraft carrier or a destroyer. Yes I know they are surface vessels but the principle is the same.
Men and women working in a close environment.
Are you one of those who would have sex with another woman or man for that matter when the missus
was not nearby.
Come on guys we are in 2022, not 1922.
Maybe for some it's no different. Cavemen mentality.

But then these days they probably need a purple submarine, a green submarine & a yellow submarine!

Chalk and cheese; Aircraft carriers are mini cities with room for separate facilities whereas submarines have very close confined areas, basic shared toileting facilities, hot bunking (when I get out of bed, you get in). Particularly when deploying CDT's or Marines, with a full compliment on board.
Mike is absolutely correct - an idiotic idea.

Look its a fact of life that females are now frontline combat soldiers sailors and aviators.
Mu corps the RAAC now has mixed crews in armoured vehicles, a tank in my time was a crew of 4, consider when on operations or training exercises a crew is in close proximity of each other. I'm sure there is sufficient training of how to cohabitation with members of the opposite sex.
If a female can do the job why should be any restrictions where she can serve.

Perhaps for some of those here who fall in the category of misogynistic, if the shoe was on the other foot you would all
be up in arms. It is a right of passage for a male to have sex with as many females as possible and brag about it
with 'mates' at the local watering hole. However if the same is performed by a female she is labelled as a 'slut' or a 'whore'.

In my working life I have met too many co-workers who could not help themselves when we travelled the
country side for work commitments. Anything was fair game, including a visit to the local brothel. The majority
had wives and children. Would it be as widely accepted if the roles were reversed. Reality buddy.

Submarine or whatever, isn't it about time you lot considered females to have equal rights or do you think
they should be subversive. Granted some may not have the physical strength a male has but I bet they would
run rings around some of the misogynists intellectually. This can be a fear for some as all of a sudden they feel
inadequate. Similar to small penis syndrome.

If you have daughters I sincerely hope they are safe and they only do what they want to.
Yes, females have equal rights but that doesnt stop males from treating them with respect even though at times I do doubt some actions from some females.

From my point of view, it's not a question of ability or physical strength. I just think it's inadvisable to introduce a distraction in a situation where young male hormones are rampant. It's just a biological reality, as crude as it may sound. Anything that takes the edge off in combat would be undesirable.

I agree, anything that can create problems are certainly not needed on a submarine. The reference to the sub at Holbrook is hardly a comparable one to modern day boats. 3/4 times as big????.
I am all in favour of equality for women but there are some situations where, imho, it is just not practical.

In the 1970s the Royal Australian Navy acquired six Oberon class submarines from the UK with a submerged displacement of 2,400 tonnes; the current Swedish designed Collins class are 3,400 tonnes and the future French designed Attack class are predicted to come in at just under 5,000 tonnes.
Most navies prefer the mission flexibility that comes with designs in the 2,000 4,000 tonne category and the advanced electronics and large weapon loads that they can carry.
The larger the submarine, the larger the sonar arrays that can be carried particularly as conformal designs become more prevalent. These add enormously to both the combat power and intelligence gathering capabilities of submarines;
Crew habitability is often overlooked, with greater weapon load, particularly with missiles now being added to the mix of what can be carried to sea.

With soooo much gender and sexual diversity who's to say keeping women out of submarines would 'still' the guys raging hormones and stop them being distracted anyway.
As a female I have to say if most men's farts smell as bad as my hubby's I would rather chew my arm off than be stuck under the sea with a bunch of guys even if they were all gay

Even when submariners come back to port/base and had an hour in the shower - people move away on the bus/train ride home, the smells permeate the skin. They're not jokingly called "pig boats" by other sailors for no reason.

I have been told this by people who sail Sydney to Hobart & other yacht races. The only time they notice the smell is after the crew has got off the boat then they go back on the boat, then they notice the stench & throw up.
