There has been an upsurge lately on the forum, of the use of above. Perhaps some could enlighten me as to how you can thank someone when you don't know what they are going to say?. They might well say something that you really don't want to thank them for. As for the use of the letter x how much more difficult is it to spell the word correctly?.
The current mass degredation of a beautiful language is an abomination.

Have to generally agree with you.
I am by no means an expert of our language but to be honest, I cringe at some of the wordings and spellings I read in the print and social media.
Really, are people that busy that many of our words need to be shortened or to make quotes that only some can understand.
Now having said all the above in my rant, I was recently guilty of writing OMG in a post.
Magnarc, they are brainwashing me and this is only the start.

It's just a polite turn of phrase. If I were a cynic, then every time someone asked me "how are you going?", I would respond with "do you really want to know, or are you just being polite?".

Sometimes, if I'm in a mischievous mood, and the girl on the checkout says "Hello, how are you today?"... I tell her.... :)

I don't respond to any posts, on any forums, that have TIA tagged to them. I feel that the poster has just put the question up, expecting someone else to do the work of searching etc. for them. If they can't take the time to read and express a reply to our response, they can take a jump!

That's a harsh interpretation. It could just be the poster's shorthand way of thanking those people who bother to read his question.
My beef is with those octogenarians with their silly adolescent affectations. I'm referring to those for whom uppercase and punctuation are "unkewl". In reality I think it's just a vain attempt to disguise illiteracy, in much the same way that a balding man attempts to disguise his hair loss by shaving his head.

maY bE iam missen out on Sumpten anyhow i sweep what hair I have left acroos the bald spot.
Last time I went to a barber for a haircut he put the price up.I said that is not fair for the little bit I have left.
He said I was for a search fee. you just can't win.

I see the phrase as an attempt at Guilt Induction and manipulation. Just more useless verbiage that imposes on my time budget. Perfectly appropriate to ask the Forum a question, any question, but do not be so presumptuous to expect a reply from every person who reads your question.

Stewart, I am at my most pedantic when it comes to the English language. I don't always get it right, I have yet to meet someone who does, but what does stick in my craw is the Americanisation, in particular the word "gotten". We hear words mispronounced all the time by our so called TV Reporters, and as for sports commentators, well, say no more!
