Yesterday I read in a UK paper about a museum in York that has an attraction called The Dick Turpin ride. Turpin was an early 1700s highwayman who rode from London to York in what was believed to be a record time. He was hanged at York for horse stealing among his many other crimes. Now the Woke brigade want his name changed to Richard!
History is just that, if it occurred then it is fact. History cannot be changed to suit someones current views. No one would dispute that things were done in the past that were just plain wrong but you can't simply whitewash them away, surely the the thing to do is learn from them and to make sure that they do not happen again?.
We all know that the word Dick has a modern application that is derogatory, I confess to having used it on occasion (usually on the road!), but does that warrant it being expunged from use when used as a personal name?. Surely not. Happily the owner of the Museum told them to take a running jump, lets hope that there are more people who think like him.
PS I have to say that I don't agree with our forum rules that ban certain words from being spelled properly. Even if words are altered everyone knows what is being said so what is the point? Say it as it is folks, I can't believe that there would be too many on here that would take offence at the use of the first four letters of a word that descibes a male chicken?. However, since I am a law abiding citizen whilst I am still a member here, I will continue to observe the rules.
"Doesn't much sound like something woke people would do, more like staunch conservative Christians. The wokies are more likely to proclaim we can't assume his gender."
"An obvious wind-up. Invented either by some journalists or a tourist director who wanted to get some free publicity."

Not just that but there are some words mean completely different things around the world. There is one word in particular I find very offensive here in OZ but have heard it used many times in England and the U S of A and has a different meaning and obviously not offensive.

Dorian, Christians or Woke describe them as you will, it really does not matter whether they are one or the other, the aim is the same. Reading comments in newspapers will always get you both sides of the discussion along with contributions by the Richard Craniums of this world. Christians or Woke is just splitting hairs imho.

Christians have always been complaining about dicks, so nothing new there. We used to call them "wowsers". "Wokeism", on the other hand, is the new atheistic religion.
So far there is no comment from Spiked, but let's stay tuned:

In days gone by, a person who complained about the use of certain words would be laughed off as a prude or a wowser, and that would have been the end of it. Nowadays the anti-woke crowd beat up such idiotic non-issues so that they are seen as challenges to the social fabric, and they then endeavour to use them to discredit the genuine social justice campaigners.

Its all about just getting noticed ,people nowadays can`t bear the thought of not being `someone`. Thats why the press print all this crap ,just to get noticed ! Over here in NZ young girls have just gone on the rampage through a shopping mall ,you guessed it ,on facebook and the like as they did it !!!
Best thing to ever happen would be to ban ALL social media forever .
