When I was in primary school there were no kids in hospital with allergies.
But one student with blood from his wrist from the cane, another from broken knuckles from the black board duster, another with a torn ear & a number who fainted from hitting their head collapsing in pain. The teachers tried to cover up these state sanctioned torture events.
I once got caned for something I never or had any association with, to get even I turned off taps regularly so they could never be turned on. Must have cost a fortune in plumbers.

A few years ago I was told a tale by a guy who would now be in his early 70s of how he attended an expensive private boys school in Melbourne and one teacher's idea of punishment was to instruct the offending boy to put the classroom metal waste paper bin over his head which the teacher would then strike with a golf club.
If the bastard had done that to one of my children he'd have been in hospital first thing the next morning.
They weren't always "The good old days".

I think the reason things changed is that some parents of children were very good lawyers & it was getting too expensive to bash school children to within an inch of their life, & this was a public school. Let alone the permanent damage both physical & psychological.
One of our primary school teachers had a rack above the blackboard (old fashioned whiteboard) with about a dozen (pre metric) canes to send a visible message to the kids.

The senior school I attended did not have corporal punishment, I'm pleased to say but at my primary school I was "slippered" and caned a number of times - it did no good whatsoever indeed the opposite in that it made me resentful of and mistrusting in authority which is a part of my personality to this day. And I was not a bad kid just adventurous and curious with a penchant for saying what I thought (still do :) ).
I am not against the very occasional smack across the bottom for a toddler but I never saw any good, although a lot of damage, come from formal CP.

If I had been punished at school, and if my father had found out, he would have belted me a second time, and a lot harder.

Such was not uncommon but do you really think it is a good parenting strategy?

It worked for me. However, I understand that a line must not be crossed. I think you should be able to spank a misbehaving brat, but even this is not legally permissible today.

Caned at school, horse's whip used at home, mouth washed out with soap at various clubs.
Hands on head during entire class lesson, I actually didn't mind it & would put my hands on my head at start of lesson. The teachers would say you can take your hands down & I said I am quite comfortable.
After hours punishment, I was happy to outlast the teachers. After a few hours... you have to leave now... Now!

A quick google indicates it is legal to smack children but it should be proportionate, which is common sense of course.
A few years past I was in a queue of about five at the supermarket and a mother with about a three year old girl was at the front of the queue; the little girl was being a menace and mum could hardly cope. Eventually I took something away from the child (unpaid for sweets or similar) and put it out of reach and she quietened down enough for mum to complete her shopping.
Once mum and menace had cleared the supermarket I loudly announced; "Nothing wrong with that child that a firm hand across the backside would not cure." Half the supermarket cheered :)

People in general do not respond well to such treatment, it may be able to beat them into submission for a short time but it will never win their hearts and minds.
Others, such as WhenAreWeThere and me, simply become resentful and will fight it all the way and then such tactics can become *very negative indeed*. Push someone far enough and you just never know how they may respond.
There is always a better way... if you have the will and intelligence to look for it.

I think it is all how you take the punishment.
I think my dad only gave me a whoppin about three of four times during childhood.
When each time was over and I had spent some time by myself he would come and explain exactly why I was punished. At each time he was upset and that was enough to make me understand and more to the point, respect him and have respect for correct conduct.
Now the cane at school was another situation.
Many teachers (male) used to administer the cane, some a lot harder than others.
During primary school all the boys learnt who hit hard and who didnt.
In 6 th class there were 4 off us that had a competition as to who could get the cane the most during our final year at primary.
We would get 2 on any day with 4 *cuts* for the more serious misdemeanours.
In the end our class teacher worked out what was happening and became reluctant to cane any of us. Sort of like reverse psychology in a way.
So what we did was one of the four of us was the school bell monitor and what we did was got him to ring the bell to start school 12 minutes early.
Well he won the comp because on that morning he got 6 *of the best* and even though we signalled him to ring the bell we werent even disciplined at all.
The signal was for the teacher to wave his arm out the classroom window to have the monitor ring the bell and what we did was one of us went into the classroom and waved and the bell was rung.
When we think about it now it was a very poor administration of justice as was a lot of other times when we got *the cuts* but it was how it was back then.
Back then some kids cried when they got the cane, nowadays they cry if you look at them the wrong way when taking their phone off them for ten minutes.

Best school punishment that I witness at my all boys school:
A boy that's been playing up is told to come out the front of the class & bend over.
The teach grabs a metre long wooden blackboard ruler & wacks him on the a*se.
The boy was a ''behind the shelter shed smoker'' & he had a box of matches in his back pocket.
The impact set his a*se on fire when the match heads rubbed together.

That is a funny story though,
I was lucky, my dad ripped us out of the catholic school when I was 10 yo and set us into the public system.

True and teaching with the cane didn't always work.
Headmaster used to use a 6ft length of garden hose as a cane/whip, Father O'Shea was the bastards name.
I got 6 cuts on each hand in front of the whole school assembly (for smoking on the school oval), 14y/o at the time, smoked for 40 years after,...... my old man wanted to kill him when he found out.
Catholic schools were child brutality at their finest.
Evidence that Millennials have now entered the work force.
