The combination of the models created by this LIDAR data and other data from Geographical Information Systems (GIS) should help with the reaction and possibly the prevention of damage caused by natural disasters.
I've seen GIS used to identify illegal logging and monitoring of forests. I can easily see it being use for other monitoring services.

Back in the 1980s, & they were there long before that, I used to supply some materials to Manly Vale Hydraulic laboratory https://www.mhl.nsw.gov.au/ They used to build scale models of suburbs & simulate rainfall events & map flooding.
From my discussions with the workers the physical models were pretty good at predicting stormwater drain & flooding issues. They also did coastal erosion physical models which provided pretty good data.

I also did a tour of that place. I really liked it. The simulations are probably all done on computers now.
I remember seeing a simulation of what a tsunami would do to Wollongong and other coastal settlements. A lot of people would be displaced to say the least.
