I've tried researching but cannot find an explanation to eliminate my confusion:
As I understand it Paine had a consensual and reciprocated "sexting" event with a woman who worked for Cricket Tas. Allegedly he also sent her an unrequested personal photograph and I think that is the sum total of the naughty stuff, have I missed anything?
I am confused as to why this is a resigning matter? I would have thought it was mainly between Paine and his wife.
What have I missed?

The other "consenting Party" is reportedly about to sue Tasmania Cricket.

Mike, you have missed nothing.
It appears that it is now about the money that the woman may receive from a law suit. Very similar to the drunken sex liaison between two workers from Parliament House that, now, years later is in the courts with the male half of the cavorting couple being charged.
as an edit;
I do apologise to the offended for my misogynistic view on both these cases.

So why did Paine resign?
It seems his only "crime" is a little low level cheating on his wife which is a matter for them and no one else.

Mike, I dont think any of us will be privy to what has actually been said or suggested by the cricketing authorities toward Paine.
My thought is that with the season and Tests looming it was perfect timing for the aledged victim to indicate proceedings to gain maximum impact.
Did Tim resign or was he pushed.? Will we ever know? Not until he writes a book in the future.

Maybe it has something to do with fact he is meant to be a roll model for children

I cannot find anything to that effect here (or elsewhere):
Even if that were the case are you suggesting only people who never slip from perfection should hold such a role? Even Ghandi beat his wife.
Having raised children it's my opinion that teaching them about people's fallibility is more important than presenting the world as a perfect place.

CA wants Smith as captain, Tim is in the way and the dont know how to remove him gracefully. They cant put Smith in straight away as that wouldnt look good. OK, well make a pace bowler captain and Smith vice captain. Pace bowlers are prone to breaking down. Pat captains a game or two, suffers an injury and Smith is elevated to captain. Due to niggling injuries, Pat cant return as captain as it will disrupt the smooth flow of the team.
Its as good a theory as any other.

While I may not subscribe to the theory there is a plan as rgren2 lays out, I was interested to read a couple of things about this issue over the last couple of days.
Firstly, a comment made by by one scribe, who I cant recall, talking about how over the last few years, it appeared Steve Smith did a lot of captaining with respect to field placements and movement, waving his arms and calling for people to move, without consultation with Paine or the vice captain of the day.
Secondly, I was interested in a comment Pat Cummins made that people should expect to see Smith being involved doing exactly that with respect to field movements etc. during Cummins time as skipper.
Perhaps CA preparing the audience for the Smith ascension in the future?
Perhaps another conspiracy theory may be that, as the woman involved was not interested in the matter being played out in public, and I assume Paine would have thought the same, did CA leak the info to precipitate the changes they wanted to see? Makes one wonder, as I agree with Mike that really, the matter was between Paine, his family and the woman.

I sympathise with Paine, resigning for a private matter. But in the public eye and with sporting people being a role model for children, I can understand his doing.
BUT what sort of message is being sent to these kids when we let a person who was part of a cheat come back into the game in a prominent position. A cheat is a cheat. So lets the kids it is ok to cheat, you will get a smack on the wrist, a bit of time off, and then it will be ok to come back, as if nothing ever happened.
A private matter is just that, private. People are people. It had no immediate impact on the game, players of other teams, and happened quite some time ago. If there is anything to answer to, why was it kept under wraps for so long. If drastic it should have been brought to light immediately.
But cheating is cheating. It immediately impacts on the players and other teams. All credibility goes out the window. All involved should have been barred for at least five years and never to hold a prominent position again.
Tis just my opinion.

I agree with Smith not being part of any captaincy. He forfeited the right to any position when he blatantly cheated.

It is *utterly* beyond me why some men think this is a "Good Idea"!
If one knows even the first thing about women it is that such imagery is of little to zero interest to them - unlike males to who the inverse imagery is of considerable interest! :)
