I don't have a problem with the thread being deleted, it was getting pretty volatile.
Sherro achieved his goal, it was obvious from the start he was spruiking his message to a largely unreceptive audience, once he had everyone stirred up he was able to take the high moral ground claiming victimisation, then flounced out acting highly offended, I've seen similar behaviour in the past, some people love the limelight.

Sherro made some very serious claims. He was asked, several times, to substantiate these claims with evidence. In particular, his claim about mercenaries being used by Vic police was shown to be false, and his claim that 10 protesters were killed by police was repeatedly avoided. Ultimately he conceded that these deaths were only "supposed".

Now that he has been acquitted of murder, he is being offered work in politics.
Several Republican congressmen have sought to offer him a post as an intern apparently with an eye to his emerging status as a hero for some American conservatives.

I can't help feeling that Rittenhouse used the excuse of protecting businesses to try out his latest gun purchase. There appears to be no decency left. Then again, I'm not a United Statesman so I don't know how they think.
Is it a case of hitting the overpopulation stage, like rats eating each other in a sealed silo when the grain runs out, where so called humans can't tolerate others and start killing? Like that fellow who drive his SUV through a Christmas parade.
Somethings go to give and it seems like anarchy has started.

How many 17 year olds do you know that do that? If you did know someone, how would you feel if people who knew nothing about him made unfounded accusatory remarks?

He was only one of the volunteers who risked their safety to protect property against the arsonists and others intent on causing malicious damage. The owner of the car business they were protecting put out a call for help after 2 car yards were burnt out and trashed the previous nights. Apparently he received 5,000 responses and 1,000 who comiitted to turn up. No reports on how many actually did. Was it a wise decision to do so? Probably not. I wouldn't, but many did and put their lives at risk for community benefit.
Had he not been armed, those intent on hurting him would have done so, and he probably would not be with us today. I would say that would be a great loss.

A society that is horrified that cities can be looted and burned while law enforcement stands back and allows it to happen for political purposes. That explains why the communty is standing up to the lawlessness. Note that they weren't the ones breaking the law.
Don't try to compare the US to Australia. We have never seen the war zones erupt in our cities like they have.

It is a society where both sides of the political spectrum claim the moral high ground for the violence that both sides perpetrate on each other, in the name of freedom and God. With a few notable exceptions, the war zones they have seen in their cities have been self inflicted.
You say dont compare us to the US, and then do just that.
Unfortunately, too many in our country are trying to move us the way of the US now.
We have much to be thankful for living in this country. Fear the day when people can roam the streets during demonstrations, armed with guns and the like. That is not national pride, that is anarchy.

I have absolutely no wish to go to America. I have seen and read enough over the years and although I have no doubt some of their country looks amazing we have no interest in travelling there, our choice. My wife and I are well travelled both here and overseas compared to most, very lucky. Once things settle back down we will continue to go overseas while young and fit enough to do it, but there are some countries we have no wish to travel, for our own reasons. Ian

I agree their is much to like about the US and its achievements, but that doesnt mean the faults should be ignored. Cheap debating points apply equally in these sort of cases.
The riots were anarchy against the rule of law. No argument, and no justification from me for the riots.
The authorities are there to police and handle this. If it is not their job, then why have them and laws? It is not for private citizens to come and take vigilante action themselves. To allow that to happen is in my opinion a recipe for longer term disaster for the society. I am aware of the romanticism you mention, but the situation, times and enemy were very different. I doubt romanticism was at the forefront of this mans mind.
In the end, I cannot believe that 2 wrongs will make a right. Civilians on both sides of the political divide, confronting each other violently is not what we should expect or want for our society.

The better half and I have made many trips to the US, loved every minute we were there, some of our stays extended into months, the people, particularly rural people, are overwhelmingly hospitable, the scenery and infrastructure sensational.
You can't judge a country if you've never visited, the media reports we get in Australia focus on the sensational/negative aspects of America.
Sadly, no longer enjoy long haul flights, so we've made our last visit, if this were not the case would be back there in a heartbeat.

As I said it was a feeling.
I've been to the USA a few times. Once for holidays and others for work.
Whilst in L.A. we went to a small, convenience store for some snacks. The next day we found out that it had been robbed that evening and shots were fired.
Another time, whilst visiting associates/friends in Washington DC, we were told, by the locals 'Don't run at the airport. The security guards will shoot you before chasing you because they are too fat.'. That's scary.
I certainly don't want to live in that sort of society. However, I have very good USA friends and they are very 'normal'. They are well educated, hate the gun laws and identified themselves as Canadians whilst travelling during the Bush and Trump eras.

At LAX early seventies, I was running late to catch a plane to Georgia. Being an Aussie that walks/keeps to the left, I ran in, the out side, of entrance - I was stopped abruptly by a .45 Automatic resting on my forehead - As soon as I opened my mouth with a few expletives, the Air Marshall said - "Oh! I visited the US several times during the 1980s. I was always treated very well. However, in Boston I was warned to stay away from the Combat Zone, and in Chicago my colleague told me to wind up the car windows when stopped at traffic lights.
