I have put one of these on the drain plug of my rear water tank. (Kiss) Just turn on the tap to get an accurate water level. And because it's just push on I can simply twist it to drain the tank if needed. More accurate than the 12v gauge in the kitchen.
Now adding this one to the front tank which I suspect is not filling completely.
Put a few graduation marks on it for better resolution.

Yeh, the original has a bit of red tape at the 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4

Do you have any problems with little crawlies entering the open end of the level sight tube?

No. I mostly have the tap off though.

That's not really a concern because when the drain tap is opened water will flow *out* of the tank and keep any insects in the tube from entering the tank.
If you are really concerned you could always tape some fine weave material over the open end of the tube, this will allow air to flow but prevent insects getting in.

Yes, initially the tube was plugged and a pin hole was in the end for that reason. Yet to see insects in the tube. But sometimes I drain the tank so with no plug now I just need to twist it to point down and open the valve. Once you push the tube on the outlet it's actually pretty hard to pull off again.

I have the OEM water tank gauges on my van that show 0 1/4 1/2 3/4 Full. they're very inaccurate, but still good enough to say to SWSBO "Better go easy on the water. There's not much left. Have a bucket wash instead of a shower.""

Certainly low tech and if it's raining not convenient but, works every time, cheap, accurate and reliable.

I attached a clear tube next to the tank and had a bit of red plastic that floated inside the tube. Easy to see the level at a glance
The top was secured to the top of the tank so it was a closed system
