Can you please explain exactly what you're asking? If the axle group is rated at 2500kg,it is rated to carry a maximum weight of 2500kg.Cheers

Hi Greg.That 2500kg is the rated carrying capacity of the AXLE GROUP,and is the total for the two axles together.However,your van's ATM may well be less than that figure,so best to check ALL figures on your van's compliance plate,and let us know.Where abouts in OZ are you? Cheers
P.S If you still have your Territory,maximum towing capacity is 2700kg for 4wd Diesel,from memory.

Spoke to AL-KO and they answered question. If a single axle is rated at 1600kg and used in tandem , you de rate by 20% and add them together to get 2500kg axle group rating.

Thanks Greg.That's interesting.Anyway,have you checked your ATM? It may be possible to increase your ATM,if that is what you would like to do, within the limitations you have.My van has axle rating of 3200kg,and ATM of 3500kg. Cheers

Yes yobar, have spoken to a company in WA ,who can increase the ATM to gain the desired outcome. Will always need to be wary of what we do re weight but we will be legal and that what matters.

Great result Greg,but you must be wary of exceeding your car's maximum towing capacity,which is 2700kg,assuming a Diesel 4wd Territory. You can quite legally tow,for example,a 3500kg ATM van,as long as the actual towed weight is no more than 2700kg. Please keep us in the picture,as I,for one,would be most interested to see what ATM your van is given.Perhaps 3000kg? Cheers

Hi Greg.Several things to be addressed here,and I do understand that you may already know this? First,you must make sure that your car is fitted with the. heavy duty towbar,as the standard towbar is good for only 1600kg,I seem to recall.Secondly,the generally accepted towball weight for safe towing is 10% of ATM.Your planned 185kg is only 7% of ATM,and waaaay too low.Dangerous.Sometimes,if your car is a lot heavier than the van it is towing,you may get away with lower towball weight,but not in your case.Thirdly,your car has a rear axle carrying capacity of only 1530kg.With the generally accepted 10% towball weight,you would have 265kg on your towball,BUT this puts 380kg onto your car's rear axle.(Think 'Levers') The extra 115kg comes OFF your car's front axle,and is transferred to the rear axle.This weight can NEVER be returned.Assuming you were able to load your car to its GVM of 2590kg (and you won't be able to do this because of the 115kg lost from the front axle) you then would have GCM of 4980kg, made up of 2590kg total weight on car wheels (GVM if you like) plus weight on van's wheels (GTM) of 2390k.(2655kg ATM minus 265kg towball weight). IF you were able to actually achieve these figures,you would have a well set up vehicle,with the car being around 10% heavier than the van. BUT, and it is a Big 'but',as always,your car's limiting factor is its lightweight rear axle.I'm guessing the weight on that axle at tare would be around 950kg-1000kg (?),with no fuel,(60kg?) no passengers,(160kg?) no tools,(20kg?) and without the 380kg that your 265kg towball weight puts on that axle. It all will be absolutely borderline,but with careful loading of both car and van,it can be done.Good luck,Greg,and please let us know how it goes!Cheers.
P.S Just remembered that there were speed limitations for Territory when towing.Might be worth checking?

Perhaps you have the two sets of figures confused,as weight on FRONT axle would reduce,and weight on REAR axle would increase when weight was applied to towball.However,assuming that your rear axle weight actually is 1409kg when van is connected,all looks very good EXCEPT your towball weight is too low,at only about 155kg.IF you increase that to 250kg (10%) that will apply around 360kg to your car's rear axle.Almost PERFECT.Well done.Please let me know if I have misunderstood your figures.Weight can be added to towball by things like keeping water tanks full, and putting heavy stuff in front boot.I leave my jockey wheel on top of drawbar. Looks good Greg,as adding 64kg to towball weight (to get to 250kg,or 10%) will put about 90kg extra onto your rear axle,so you're up to 1500kg. Perfect! You've done well.Cheers
